How much of a gamble is a Bitdi 204ps? 2018

Hi all, I have been looking for a van for over a year now and havent quite found the right one. I keep getting drawn to the Bitdi 204s but have heard so much about how the engines can go wrong. How much of a gamble is it to go for one of these and is there anything I could do to mitigate buying a bad van. thanks

There are thousands of 204 T6's running around in perfect health, (nobody creates a thread to tell the rest of us that he's had another year of perfectly trouble free use from his 204) but I've seen an increasing number of threads on here about 204's with catastrophic engine problems, some with low miles and good service history. It's not that you're likely to buy a wrong'un, it's the fact that if you are unlucky it's disastrously expensive!
I'd be looking for a 150 instead, more than capable of keeping up with traffic even fully loaded and with less likelihood of issues, although every vehicle purchase involves an element of risk.
And in answer to your second question, I don't think there is a great deal you can do, apart from the normal stuff, to mitigate buying a bad van unless you can have a 1,000 mile test drive before purchase to see how much oil it's using.
I think the easiest and cheapest thing to do with a van that's starting to use more oil is to part exchange it or sell it, which is a deal you don't want to be on the wrong end of.
Just my opinion, of course!

Pretty much as above - I'd love a 204/199 BiTdi 4motion but the potential bills if anything big goes wrong are eye watering!!

If it's a 2018 then it'll be eligible for the VW all in which gives you another 2 years warranty.

If I ever swap out my 150tdi caravelle for Bitdi, it'd be as new as possible T6.1, I think (hope) any issues would be sorted on a 2021/22 van.

love my 204,

been running it for six years with no catastrophic problems.

i wouldn't be put off buying another one,

dont forget its a machine, and needs regular maintenance, - so a full service history is most important thing to look at when buying a second hand one.

see my service history :

My 204 has been great, regularly serviced but no major money spent in the 3 years I've owned it and its on 150K miles....

The case against the T5 180 bi-turbo seems to be completely unquestionable but I have not seen anything convincing for our T6s. As said earlier I think the extra cost of repairs when things do go wrong might be what compels people to moan. But that's the consequence of a more complicated engine, it's bound to be more expensive to work on. The power is amazing, it's a delight to drive.

I’ve got a 2016 CFCA (180ps), taken the necessary measures to guarantee the EGR issues are eliminated and it never needs oil top ups between oil changes.
Oil analysis is showing very good results.
