How do I - thread cutting.

Just M6 1.00, hard stainless and a cheap die.
This is what I have for my lathe. Perhaps you could use this as a hand tool, also available in metric.

Thanks,I'm getting there slowly with just mole grips, and I only need to do one clamp so I'm not buying more tools. Wouldn't mind a little lathe for the garage though ...
Well hard and will work harden depending on alloy, we used to occasionally install stainless cable trunking in a food factory and that would kill a Starret hole saw in seconds, we used to use hole punches after learning.

if its not seen you could put a couple of M8 nuts to use as spacers = no cutting
or if your not in a rush to finish it ill have a look to see if i have a M6 hex die and post you one
Thank you that's very generous. Yes it'll be seen (it's just a switch guard) so spacers won't work. I'm getting there with my silly cheap little die but have taken a beer break
Don’t grind, weld or clamp the die. It is hardened steel, heating it will normalise it and it won’t cut.
If you don’t want to bend the legs to access the tool then the simplest solution would be to fit some tubular spacers or buy some M6 studding and make the U bolt you need.

Phew, done it. Just mole grips and far too much time in the end, 1cm of extra thread on each side. SWMBO is ever so impressed
