Hazard lights coming on randomly

Ok so hoping someone might know what's going on with my T5.1 and the hazard lights. I've had a look and it doesn't look like there's a similar post already on the forum.

So we've had our T5.1, a DIY camper conversion just over a year and its been great, no real issues, but when me and my son were camping in it last week, I got up in the night and the hazards were on. Flicked the unlock button on the key and it stopped. It happened every night afterwards, its really disconcerting and its definitely a new thing.

Here's what I've worked out:

- It seems to happen in response to me moving.

- It only seems to happen when the van is locked.

Because of this, I feel like its a van alarm thats had the sounder removed, basically the alarm triggers when I get up in the night and just the indicators come on, but what doesn't make sense is why this has only just started happening. It is very random.

If anyone else has experience of this issue I'd be really grateful to read your feedback.

Thanks everyone

Pete

How are you locking the van when you're sleeping in it?

Hi Pete, it does sound like your alarm. Do you have a button on the B post near the drivers seat belt? You should be able to disable it for sleeping in the van

Sounds like you haven't disabled the internal sensors. Did you single or double press the key fob?

Phil, yes I do but I had no idea what it was for. Will give it a try, thanks!

Single, Bav
Yeah, that'll lock & set the internal movement sensors.

Bearing in mind my van's a T6.1, so not guaranteed to be identical to yours, a double press on the fob locks the van whilst disabling the internal sensors. I tend to use the locking button on the driver's door, which does the same. Not sure if there's such a button on your van - if not the button on the b-pillar should do the same.

Only puzzle is why no audible alarm - like you say the sounder could have been removed/disabled for some reason. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hopefully that sorts it, try leaving a window open and lock you van so you can put your arm inside and set the alarm off. Sounds like you do not have a siren.

To check your button works, press it and lock the van. The move around inside and see what happens

If you ever travel on a ferry, you should always disable the alarm with that button on the B post, otherwise the alarm will go off when moving ! (If you've been on a ferry, you can't miss the alarms going off)
PS, not sure on T5.1 but on my T6 (camper), when locking the doors at night whilst in the van, use the rocker switch on the drivers door mirror end. You can open/close/lock the sliding door manually.
To reactivate the alarm, unlock with key fob, open/close driver/passenger door.

Do you not have the lock/unlock buttons by the wing mirror controls I use these to lock van at night

Must try this double lock thing, didn't know it was a thing on T6.1

If you double press the key fob to lock, it does disable the interior sensors. However it leaves the doors deadlocked. Whereas the button on the drivers door locks the van without deadlocks. This might be preferential if you ever need to get out of the van fast and cant find the fob in the panic.

Yeah - thought about mentioning deadlocking, but didn't want to confuse matters given OP has a 5.1 and I wasn't sure if that applied to those. 🤪

Could be that the alarm sounder has died or been disabled.
Try locking it from the inside by pushing the buttons down on each door then dance around inside and see if the hazards start .
