Grrrr….ruddy suspension knocking noises…

Quick update…got in the van yesterday morning to be greeting with the flashing tyre pressure light and the ABS light. 10 yards down the road they all went out and haven’t come back on since! Mechanic said to bring it round with them still on if I can but we’re back to plan a and get the knocking noise and the chirping (possible bearing issue) sorted and then plan to get it up to @CRS Performance for the upgrades we’ve talked about!

Those symptoms are usually because the ABS sensor and exciter ring on the bearing are dirty , If the fault keeps recurring one of these things will have failed .

Ah ok, I get the feeling all these things are linked. I don’t know for sure which sensor flashed up but wonder if it was the front drivers side where I’m getting the knocking and chirping. Funnily enough, the lights all briefly came on as I got in it to come back from work tonight but went off within a minute or so again.
Tempted to get it booked into a VAG specialist and get them to do a full health check or something similar (if that’s a thing)

. I don’t know for sure which sensor flashed up
Carista or similar will identify which position, wheel speed sensor failure is a common defect. My advice is to but a full set of 4 as they will all fail, simple job to replace.

On my 320D E90 a few years back the reluctor ring had corroded causing it to expand and cut the end off the ABS sensor, similar selection of lights and as the half shaft has to come out an expensivish ball ache.

Already had a device on my shopping list…will bring that purchase forward a bit I think!

Righty ho…bit of an update. Van went into the local indi VW specialist and they couldn’t find any issues with the suspension or any noises (chirping from front right wheel etc). To be fair, I’d not heard the knocking for a few weeks (I’ll come back to a theory in a min…) so as far as they were concerned there’s nothing to fix. I asked them to triple check bushes etc but they were all noted as ok. The warning lights that were on were related to a faulty abs sensor on the nsf wheel, which had been damaged by a knackered wheel bearing (exciter ring broken, damaging the sensor I think). Replaced those bits, a good health check and an 4 wheels anlighnment and all good. Or so I thought.

The chirping from the osf wheel is still there. It seems to occur at around 30mph or so, when the steering wheel turns ever so slightly, mostly to the right but sometimes to the left. Having googled it quite a bit, it does seem to point back to that wheel bearing too, but obviously I can’t be sure, but not sure what else it could be. I took a video this morning but I’m not sure how obvious it is, and I can’t upload it here unfortunately (do I need to be a VIP member or is it just not possible?).

Anyone with any ideas before I go back to the garage? I’ve also pinged @CRS Performance an email to see about getting booked in for the definition kit and look at getting bushes replaced at the same time too so I know everything is as good as it can be.

*theory about suspension knocking*. Before I got the van, it had had one random tyre replaced and a few miles later, it did a few knocks and bangs and then nothing. This Saturday, I had a full set of tyres replaced and it did it again. Couple of times on the way to a gig and not again. So….could it be something settling after the van has been jacked up? Seems a bit too coincidental and my theory may be bollocks but you never know…

Everything is still pointing to the wheel bearing sleeking under load. The knocking could be the springs reseating after being jacked up. What suspension do you have? Would not expect that to happen with standard suspension

I’m pretty convinced it’s the wheel bearing. Might try the garage 20 seconds from my work to see if they could have a look as I guess it doesn’t need anything specialist, though they do deal with a lot of vans.
As far as I know, it’s standard Caravelle suspension, which I think has lowered springs over a standard Transporter?

Ok Long shot , If you have had wheel bearings done on this van and the squealing noise is coming from the front i would say its the dust cover touching the disc just take a long screw driver or something to pock through the wheel and literally push the dust cover away from the disc .

You cant see this issue so if you don't know to look at this you wont find it ? Good luck Or LOOK ha ha

Ah ok….I’ll give that a bash when I get home! 👀

Well, I tried….didn't work unfortunately so I’m back to plan a of the wheel bearing (afaik this one’s never been replaced so will get that into the garage next to me at work to have a look at)

More importantly…I’m booked in with @CRS Performance for a week on Saturday after speaking to Rob at lunchtime today! Going for the ‘Definition’ kit, poly bushes at the front and have asked about wheel spacers as I’m just running standard 17s. Very exciting!

The OEM lower arm bushes have voids in them. On my 1000 mile van they were giving a bit of fore/aft movement under braking. I swapped them to Meyle heavy duty arms which have solid rubber bushes. This solved the movement issue.
This is exactly what my mysterious knocking turned out to be after 3-4 years... after I had replaced all suspension and steering componants including rack o_O It was only when I got someone else to turn lock to lock could I see what looked like the bush inside the arm juddering back and forth.

Who did the MOTs during those 3-4 years, they’re supposed to have a pry bar levered on them to check for wear?

I’m off to see CRS on Saturday so hopefully they’ll pick up anything that needs sorting. Getting the front bushes replaced for poly ones anyway

Which is a bit strange - I've got a 2016 T6 which, underneath, looks like a 3 year old, or newer. It seems a bit random which ones rust.
Same here, mines 10 years old and almost rust free. Proximity to salt water and road salt use no doubt doesn’t help.
When I lived on the Cornish coast I could hear my Jap bikes fizzing as the chrome disappeared.
