Had the engine light come on a few times, each time with this code.
is it a sensor or does the glow plug actually need replacing?

I’ve also had the MAF replaced with a new one but still get this error code.??

I get other error codes as seen below but not sure what they are?

You can meter the glow plugs and check their low resistance. That would tell you if it is the glow plug or the wiring.

Thanks mate but that’s probably beyond me.
I’ll book it in and have the garage check it out. Hopefully just a glow plug issue and a cheap fix.
I guess it’s best to replace all the glow plugs at the same time?
van has done 56k miles.

I just had one of my glow plugs go so had them all replaced ...........3 are £20 each and the one with a sensor is £140 !!

Hi loz,got the same van as you.Got a fault come up on no1 cylinder glow plug.where is this one? it it the one with the sensor on?

I’ve just been quoted £470 to replace all the glow plugs, more pricey than I was expecting. Now the van is dismantled they have found one of them seized in place. It’s another £540 to get a specialist company to remove it.

I’m interested to hear if anyone else has had this done and what sort of cost it was.

Get the one that’s failed replaced, there is no need to change them unless they have failed.

I did wonder about that, but also thinking with 95k miles on the clock maybe they will all start to fail if they have similar lifespan?

glow plug 3 is the special one with "combustion chamber pressure sensor"

+++

where is the van whos doing the plugs - VW? or local Indy? or mobile tech?

has the plug already snapped? . . . or rounded off?

It’s in with my trustworthy independent but evens so I really need to keep the bill down to minimum. I’m not sure if it’s the failed one that is stuck, not sure if it’s rounded or snapped, I need to call them tomorrow as I’ve been away and my wife has been dealing with it.

I think they’ve booked a mobile specialist to extract it on Tue.

If it is a typical service life it’s piss poor, I’ve got a 22 year old A4 on the same glow plugs it was born with.

that would imply that it snapped when trying to remove . . . .

keep us posted.

I popped in to the garage today to drop off a courtesy car, they have dismantled a fair bit to provide enough working space for the specialist to get glow plug 3 out. It’s a fair bit of work.

The top section of the glow plug has snapped off, they said it is not at all unusual sadly. Looks like another VAG maintenance design flaw with the glow plugs snapping so easily.

Keeping fingers crossed they will get it out tomorrow and then I can get the van back on the road.

It was horrendously expensive. The overall bill was £1800 but I had an oil change plus some work on the brakes. I think the glow plug specific stuff was about £1400 all in, that included £540 call-out fee for the specialist to remove the stuck glow plug. As you can see from the picture a huge amount of the van was dismantled to provide access so the majority of the bill was labour to strip it down and then reassemble.

The van was a bit rough starting with the failed glowplug which didn’t really bother me but I was concerned about poorly combusted fuel hitting the DPF on every cold start, the last thing I wanted to do was replace the DPF also if I didn’t get the glowplug sorted in time.
