Getting electrics out of a smashed wing mirror :(

A delivery van hit my driver's side wing mirror yesterday and smashed it to bits. I've removed a fair few of the components and a few of them are still in tact. The electrics are all still sound but I can't remove the various bit through the hole in the mirror surround to remove it. Do they connect inside the vehicle somewhere so I can get them out the other way? The magnetic component is too big to get through the hole. How do I get this out (and in to the new mirror case when I get it!)

The main bits that are broke are the glass, plastic surround and the metal mounting bracket thing. The rest is probably salvageable.

This all said I did get 2 reports of which company it was and they are looking in to it. fingers crossed it gets paid for as it looks like a pricey repair!

Cheers
Si

As above, remove door card, unplug the cables on the end of the wiring coming from wing mirror (one electrics plug and one or two fakra connectors depending on spec/how many aerials you have in there) then you can unscrew the three bolts that hold the mirror assembly to the van
I will point out though that I don't think the parts are available separately the main mirror bracket comes with the motorised element etc will dig out a pic for you

If you require part 1 it comes with all the part numbers shown in the bracket 3/4/6/8/9/11

Ok thanks. Got it off and patched the van up for now. Out of interest what is the blue plug in the door for? As it was not attached to anything.

Pauly what the damage price wise if I do need #1? The broken bit I think is #1, at least the main bit in the middle. It's a highline with no other options.

I think blue is GPS, guessing you dont have SatNav headunit so it wont be used

Retail price is £121.83 + vat for part 1
Thats using my VIN which is also a highline

Its expensive for a complete unit if you need to buy the aerials and cap etc to go with it
The caps only come primed so if it has to be replaced will need painting

The electrics and cap are intact (the cap is chipped from hitting the floor but nowt major) so all I need are parts 1 and 12. How do I go about ordering such things online? Can't drive my van as it's the drivers side :(

I can get them for you if you want but you are looking at best probably Tuesday until they arrive with you (possibly Wednesday or Thursday depending on VW stock) alternatively you could go to your main dealer who may well have one in stock to collect ?
I will be able to give you a bit of discount but add postage on top and there wouldn't really be much of a saving if any....

Actually perhaps someone could advise me here. My neighbour witnessed this getting smashed off and said it was a orange supermarket delivery truck, almost certainly sainburys. Made a few calls to their online team and they called me back 10mins ago and said it was indeed their truck as they have a damaged one and GPS tracking shows it goin past my house. They even provided the reg and have me the insurance details. My van was parked up so obviously this a no fault situation.

Do I need to get my insurance company involved? I'd rather not. I've not actually reported to the police either. Is this nessecery? Only ever actually dealt with this sort of thing once in a minor accident.

I would speak to them or their insurance company and ask if they are happy to settle the invoice for repairs, provide them the cost of the repair and if they agree there's nothing stopping you getting it sorted and them reimbursing you without bothering with your insurance company.
I would expect them to bite your hand off if the price is reasonable as the other option is your insurance company recover the vehicle and send it away for repair which would sky rocket the bill !
I sure our resident insurance company @PukkaT6 will have some more info for you

Thanks. Well I can offer them carrot in that if they want me to go via insurance then the van is goin straight to VW via a recovery vehicle and I will also insist they respray the 2 panels that have 2 small chips on from where the mirror hit the van. These are small and I would not be bothered personally. But when all is said and done that bill will be pretty huge to replace a wing mirror. Well over a grand I would imagine.
