General Buying advice

Likely most insurers won't insure if you intend to live in the van and those that do will charge £££ for the privilege.
Well, just been researching that and apparently there are quite a few who do insure at reasonable prices. I guess its a matter of shopping around...

Good stuff. Been retired a few years now and things move on.- perhaps there's more of a market for 'van life' cover nowadays.

Yes, always shop around, regardless of type of cover needed. It's a ball-ache, but necessary to get your best price. One word of caution though, price isn't everything - level of cover is also importamt, especially if your van is also your home.

Totally agree 👍

Their must be more types of cover available because of the sheer numbers of people that are living within their vehicles today, though many may be giving an addresses belonging to a relative, friend or what ever or even just a falsehood. I would suggest that once you feel that you are heading for a certain level and type that you talk it over with a suitable insurance company to see if your dream is realisable. I do hope that you find something and that all the official business is straightforward and pain free! :)

My ex has said i could use her address. I do already for my doc and dentist.

Quick question re: Howdens endorsement on their policy:-
  • DRV driveway - The vehicle must be kept on the drive at home 50% of the time, if damage occurs while at home and not on the drive, will not be covered by policy.
Does this mean if the van is parked on the road for whatever reason, the van is not covered when parked outside my house but on the road?! Would it be advisable to to change the quote for the van to be "parked on the road" so I am covered if I'm washing my vehicle on the road and it is damaged by another car etc or I have to put my van on the road, in order to work on my other car on the drive or the van is left on the road during the day for various reasons. I ask as I've never seen this before.
Also, what happens then if I visit family or friends and stay there, the van wouldn't be parked on the drive or the road outside my house and so does that mean the van isn't covered? Same if I go to a show etc, the van would be parked in a field etc, so would I be covered? I've emailed Howdens but haven't had a reply back as yet.

The only 2 companies I can get quotes for Agreed Value for are Adrian Flux and Howdens. Brentacre said no to agreed value for a day van. I'm not living in the van, but may stay in the van when out and about exploring Wales etc.

Any other companies that I should approach, I'm hoping to pick up my van in 2 weeks... thanks :)

Insurance companies are looking at risk where is it usually parked. risk of damage from theft drive by damage ect . If your vehicle is damaged by a third party then it is their responsibility but of course if your not there they have driven off already. There has been trends over the years for many to park in the road even when they have adequate parking. Laziness, denial of parking to third parties take your pick. If this was considered a problem by insurers then I am sure that they would be taking action in some way.

Hi, thank you, I think just to err on the side of caution, I may update the quote to be kept on the road, as I'd like to think my neighbours are all trustworthy and would tell me if they damaged my van etc, but it's the vehciles that tear around and might clip, scratch or damage the van if it is on the road for sort periods of time while washing and I've gone to move my camper or having a cup of tea etc etc lol.

So far It's only Howdens and Adrian FLux that have quoted with Agreed Value :(

How much were their quotes?

How much were their quotes?
Adrian Flux campervan/ day van conversion (bed only) with £450 excess was £676.34, but their quote included 'excess protection' (reduces £650 excess to £150), £18 admin fee for Agreed value with Trinity and S7 thatcham approved tracker. (I'm waiting for Adrian to clarify as their email says it's another £149.99 for Agreed value policy ?!)

Howdens is £750, 15K miles, agreed value and £500 compulsory excess.
  • MH4 foreign travel - 180 days EU cover included in policy.
  • RAL rallies - Covered to take vehicle to any shows/rallies.
  • CEQ increased personal effects cover - Total claim limit of £2000, SAL of £20
  • TRA securiry - A Thatcham approved category S5 or S7 tracker to be fitted within 14 days of policy inception. Theft cover will be excluded until the approved device is installed, unless already installed.
  • DRV driveway - The vehicle must be kept on the drive at home 50% of the time, if damage occurs while at home and not on the drive, will not be covered by policy.

It seems bad to me the conditions required. The ins costs are mad!

I am looking to get a T6.1 myself....

But, only the van and then get someone to insulate it, carpet it throughout, fit diesel heater and solar panel....then i would fit my own bed....

Whats stopping me from just insuring it as a panel van only?

Your policy booklet should contain the full Ts&Cs of all the endorsements.

Nothing, but it's classified as fraud.

If you get found out, the worst case scenario is that your insurer won't honour any ongoing claim (excluding the 3rd party liability component) and will seek to reclaim pay-outs made for previous claims; your policy will be cancelled forthwith, without refund; your name will be added to the Insurance Fraud Register for 5 years and during that period you'll be required to answer "yes" to the "Have you ever had insurance declined, refused or cancelled?"

All of the above will severely restrict your future choice of insurer, cause your premiums to skyrocket and result in stringent terms being applied to any of your policies - this will apply to all insurance types, not just motor.

I bought a T6.1 DSG 2020MY model year, 30k miles, 150bhp. Was pleasantly surprised at how well it drives and actually how nippy it is. Managed to get it to 110mph on the autobahn last year which was even more of a surprise! Not going to beat my old Mini Cooper JCW off the line but still actually pretty good. So I wouldn't worry about any remap if you get the 150.
I also put a VW warranty and service/MoT plan on it, 2 years at £40/month. You can do this up to 6 years after registration provided it's got a service history. If you time it right, you can make the warranty last 8 years after initial registration, which is pretty good. Again, thought this was a decent buy considering I bought second hand privately. So far the van has been mechanically sound (although door opening mech, tail gate struts and a crap audio system are downsides and the warranty won't cover them).
