Found a van...having doubts

To be fair to the converter, it looks good from the pictures and they have converted a highline with DSG which is far from the base standard model.
And then penny pinches with painted mild steel pop top hinges instead of stainless, and a flimsy looking canvas.

From the original advert it’s a Storm Pop top with stainless steel hinges that have been powder coated

What make/model is the canvas?

I could be doing it a disservice, photos aren't always flattering, but it does look thin and flimsy. The hinges are obviously cheap jobs though.

It's a fairly basic looking conversion, but not necessarily anything wrong with it as long as the basic design is what you want. The obvious point on the fundamental design is that it doesn't have any higher level cupboards so storage space is going to be very limited, how much this is an issue depends on how many people you have and what kind of trips you'll be doing.

In terms of quality of the conversion, you really need to poking around inside all the cupboards, and especially around the gas/electric to get a feel for how well it's been implemented.

Quick search of Storm pop tops… seem very reputable to me by the looks of them online.
Yes, but im discussing the canvas, not the pop top!

Storm may be superb craftsmen, but that doesnt stop someone on a tight budget using a cheap canvas.

That the ad itself doesnt state the make may itself be suggestive of a cheap generic canvas - theyve fitted or specced cheap himges, so why not a cheap canvas as well? I know if I were ever selling my van id make a point of mentioning the Cabanon canvas in the ad, but no mention of the make here.

Fair enough….. as our Skyline pop top came with a choice of their own canvases I assumed this would’ve been the same case and supplied and fitted by STORM.

As for the ad, I see what you mean about making a point of certain things about the van, some ads just are very basic, some don’t even mention whether the van has any service history. You’d think it would be the sellers chance to write war and peace about all the positive selling points right?!

Perhaps ask the dealer if they are willing to let you chat with the previous owner for you peace of mind, if they say no then thats possibly a red flag.

Good comments above re rooting through vehicle at E and G and W and take some sneaky photos.

Just a thought, it does look tidy. GLWP

Make sure you get the Seat base cover ;)
Can´t understand why you wouldn´t fit one for the pictures, especially if yo have more campers on the forecourt - may showing off the cheap AGM battery?

i,d be more put off with the chav-tastic rear tail lights and it being a SWB , than concerning myself with the deadlocks.
also i cant tell if thats a compressor fridge or not , IF its an electric peltier type, then its DEFO been built to a budget.
theres also a lack of cupboard space to the right of the sink , just alot of good missing potential storage.

Can you even buy peltier type fridges in that format?? I agree though, a peltier fridge in a conversion would be a red flag.

all over ebay, before i knew what i was going to buy, i nearly bought one , before getting a compressor type.
im not saying it is non- compressor , but it looks like one??

Clearly I lead a sheltered life, I didn't even know you could buy peltiers for fixed installations like that!

You have the advantage over us of having viewed it and your spidey senses are tingling...just go find another.
This is the bit I agree with. Trust your senses.

I’ve seen new and nearly new vans converted by companies that were just horror shows. Meanwhile ours, which was leased by VW to a tradie for a bit and then converted by a recognised brand later on, has been great.

I think take a step back and view some more vans, you are right to trust your gut, so much choice out there, and I think better rear layouts, I’m guessing you have viewed quite a few vans and seen the different kitchen/seat/bed layouts? Barn doors or tailgate? Wait till the new year, that van will probably still be on the forecourt in January if you decide it’s the one you want to buy.
Trust you gut.
