Not sure if this is the right place, but trying to avoid another thread so would like your thoughts on this issue and possible solutions.
I have a 67 plate SWB DSG shuttle with 125k miles, Had a franchise service at 120k and all well, noted need for new aux belt and tensioner so resigned to taking it to a local independent.
Whilst waiting for the van to go in I started to notice the coolant was being lost, no visible signs of a leak but loosing about 1 litre every 2000 miles. Could fathom this so advised the garage of the loss and had the timing belt and water pump done, to rule this out and also the aux belt and tensioner.
Work was completed and no visible signs of leak / loss of coolant, didn’t really help with an answer so asked for further thought. They did an overnight pressure test and nothing could be found. I was asked to run it and keep an eye. As the coolant was still being lost and I was topping it up slightly more and more but the coolant light was warning me and I was topping up in between, still no visible loss of coolant. Took it back to the garage and asked for further diagnostic work. They concluded that the pipe work from the expansion tank was to blame and changed the whole lot at a cost of £400 all in. Whilst I was in I was told that I needed an alternator clutch pulley, so booked it back in for this. Back again…
Waiting for the van to go back in, still running and topping up, the coolant was still being lost but there is now NO warning on the dash, concerning. At this point it also developed a flashing coil light on cold start, stopping and starting engine again cured the coil light. Also some mention of stop/start error….
The Garage were advised of ongoing coil light and continued coolant leak without visible signs or warning. I have now been told it was the charger cooler and this needs replacing, which has been done. £1k.
Where I am today. The coil light continues to flash on cold start and under acceleration. I think the coolant has stopped leaking, early days. I’m about £2.5k into this now and getting a little frustrated. Garage has suggested a sensor gauze fault caused by a wet belt in the sump, I would have thought if this was a concern it would have been advised at timing belt / water pump stage. Loosing a little faith in the garage and their ability to diagnose without a scatter gun approach which is costing me every time.
The van has managed very well over the last several years with careful maintenance and regular oil services etc. any ideas on next steps and approach to resolve?
Hope this is clear.
