So thinking of swapping my vw factory fit agm (under passager seat) for a lithium one. Would this be a straight swap with no issues on the current wiring/charging set up?

Thank you.

No, the charging profile of a Lithium battery is different from anything VW have accounted for in their in car electrical system, you’ll need a DC-DC charger with a Lithium charging profile option to ensure the correct charging on the lithium battery.

You’ll need a BMS to prevent over discharge and permanent damage to the battery cells.
There’s plenty of info on this on the forum.

Most direct replacement lithium batteries have a Battery Management System built in to the case, you don’t need an external one anymore unless you choose to build it up yourself from separate cells.
A Battery Monitoring System however, is a different thing, like the Victron BMV 712 is useful in determining the state of charge and charging/draining figures. These generally do not cut off the battery to prevent over discharge.
Some batteries like the Victron Superpacks have a built in cut off as well, but if you use one that doesn’t, the Victron smart battery protect does the same thing in an external module.

If you’re talking about sticking a lithium in place of a factory AGM with factory relay, I would say definitely don’t without an appropriate DC-DC convertor. The very different voltage profile and low internal resistance of the lithium battery could have pretty odd results and possibly some truly wild current swings.
