New member so bear with , I questioned DVLA regarding the tax band of my 2018 van as it has a manufacturer's Adblue tank so Euro6 status DVLA informed me they had no record of it being Euro6 and that I needed a Certifcate of conformity from manufacturers which I got at a cost of 220 euros I then sent DVLA this and the V5C document and a covering letter .
Had a webchat with DVLA today and was told that a new V5C doc had been sent out stating Euro6 status of my vehicle I then asked them why I was paying £345 for road tax when older Euro 4 and Euro 5 vehicles were only paying £140 , they said its based on CO2 emissions which I already knew when I questioned them why they terminated the webchat 😡 how can older vehicles produce less CO2 and pay less road tax it's a joke I'm going to be continuing this further as it's not right .

Its to do with when legislation was changed / introduced. Generally the changes are not retrospective. There was a period of time when diesels were actively promoted and vehicle tax reduced. When the experts realised the other emissions (not targeted) were bad the promotion / lower vehicle tax stopped.

What is more of a discrepancy is the fact my T6 is a registered as a passenger vehicle (9 seats originally) and has a lower tax rate (£195 IIRC) than a commercial vehicle - same engine/emissions

Therefore by deduction you vehicle is far less of a polluter £195 Tax amazing must have super emissions control!!

Going back to diesel promotion , when ever government regardless of creed want to raise TAX or revenue they instruct civil servants to run campaigns denigrating and building a case against what ever they want to target. The public eventually begin to turn against the CULPRIT what ever it is almost demanding action the government holds back protest start to gather and then they TAX public wonders why it too so long to act. Governments always divide and rule, in order to gain some support. Public are generally quite manipulable because they are politically unaware the subject bores them. Public need to be led in order to affect change and acceptance TAX, War what ever.

Welcome to the Forum!
Regardless of the VED debate, it seems to me pretty unfair that it cost you hundreds of pounds to get a certificate of conformity to correct an admin mistake when your vehicle was registered, incorrectly, as Euro 5.

That's VW for you. Volvo and Porsche, for example, don't charge for them if the customer can demonstrate a genuine need for one.

We shouldn't be surprised that a company that thought allowing people to die from air pollution in order to maximise shareholder return was a good thing would charge a few hundred quid for a piece of paper that cost them effectively nothing to provide.

Euro 5 only paid £140 for a very short run of a matter of months on vans manufactured in 2010 , lots of other euro 5 vans were much more .
