Engine seized

Hi all, wondering if anyone has had this problem with a 2018 T6,
Engine seized at 80 on the M1. Took to VW commercials. They have said there was 5 litres too much oil in it, causing it to seize. Breaking a conrod and bending the rest and blowing the turbo up. New engine is required. I haven’t put a drop of oil in it since it was serviced 12 months ago by VW. New engine and turbo is £14000. VW has now given me a 40% off, good will gesture. Which is something. The van has 60000 miles on and full vw history. Has anyone experienced the same engine problem and should I push for a bigger discount. Hoping someone can help, cheers
 
Dont see how you can put 5 litres too much in !!

I would guess there was some underlying problem that allowed diesel or coolant to enter the engine and flood it, i think its defo worth pressing them for any thing and everything you can get, at the end of the day they can only say no

What i would say though before you agree to any work i would get the full price from them ie a written estimate of everything required then speak to a couple local independent garages and see what they suggest and what they quote as the difference is often huge
VW can only and will only fit brand new parts supplied by VWUK but independent garages are free to to fit recon engines and aftermarket parts etc so its worth investigating
 
Sounds like it's been hydrolocked.

The "oil" level (it's unlikely to all be actual oil) could be for a multitude of reasons, and if the engine is lunched you may never know for sure.

An oil sample analysis would give you a big clue as to the cause.
 
Not sure with the 2018 models, but as per other posts, a warning comes up if there is too much oil in the engine.
It sounds like it must have happened quite rapidly and is probably coolant or diesel that has caused it, and as Sasquatch says you will probably never work out the root cause.
 
Vw blew up my T5.1 engine by putting twice the oil in. (Two different mechanics over two days)

It went in for a warranty service, and come out with a new short block engine 5months later.

Similar problems, hydro locked engine cause by over run..... The engine started running of its own oil as it was forced into the cylinders.....ended up with a new cat and dpf too as they were contaminated with oil.

As for your van.... Diesel-wash can raise the oil level. If diesel was getting into the oil, say from a leaky injector.

But they can test for that by weighing a specific volume of oil and getting the KG weight..... Because diesel in the oil weighs less than standard oil.

If there was water in the oil, it could be cloudy and would separate eventually.


How was the the van running before this happened?.

Hi the van was running good. No signs of smoke etc

this is my poor T5,1 laid up in the VW Loughton Carpark. . . . Feb 2016

theuy done a proper number on it. . . . it was over the xmas/new year break,

1st mechanic started the basic service, went went home sick. (prob hung over)
then second mechanic contuniued the following day ( again prob hung over)

the story goes the first guy done the oil change, but the second guy just added another 7.5L of oil !!

so it had twice the amount in it. . . . started the engine and raised the van on the ramps to check for leaks or whatever. . . the next minuite all hell breaks loose with a runaway engine.

final result was two bent conrods, snapped cam rockers, chipped camshaft, oil soaked cat & dpf. etc etc etc .

it took me months to battel with them . . in fairness i got to keep the new load van for the duration.

bit it took 5months to sort - as the garage wouldnt accept liability lol.

VW CV didnt want to know as it wasnt a warrenty failure - they said the garage had to pay.

so ended up in a battle with the garage to get it done. . .

the finally fitted a short block engine and cat+DPF and refitted all my ancillerys.

but just done the job in mechanics spare time instead of a booked job.

never got any paperwork or any official recognition that it ever happened. . . . they tried to just sweep it under the carpet.

that van was an 2011 plate, and this happend late 2015, so it was 5/6yrs old with about 90k on the clock.

and yep - that van was a 4Motion, DSG aswell.


its still going now with its new owners - but has a private plate on it so i cant trace the MOT history.

yours being 2018 im assuming out of warrenty?

did you have any ALL-IN cover? ( for years 4/5/6/7)

to be offered the 40% is very good for a 6/7 year old van.

id take it . . .

if you are keeping the van longer term - then great.

and if you plan to sell it on it will have a strong price, as it has a new engine/turbo/cat/dpf etc - but doubt you will get a return on your 60% of £14K.

and the chances are it will cost the same to have an indy fit a second hand engine with unknown history and life span.

Many thanks, do you think It will need a new cat and dpf. I did get the 4 service plan when I got it new. Cheers
 
Both of the two vans that are back to have a new engine have had to had a no cat and no DPF due to the oil contamination...

If your van is in with Volkswagen they should know what they're doing.... It may already be part of the job? You will have to ask them if the cat and DPF has been contaminated with oil from the blown engine .. they are costly components if they need replacing afterwards.

Nice photo showing the dipstick, it's such a shame that the second mechanic didn't think to think to use it!
