Emergency wheel size

Hi , just looked under my van at the spare tyre and it's on a 16" tyre 205/65 R16
In a emergency would this be ok to limp to a garage to get my 20" tyre fixed ?
Thanks

It depends on all the other measurements for the 20s when compared to the spare (ie. it's the overall size of the wheel/tyre combo that counts). Also, is the van 2 or 4WD as mixing sizes on the latter is not a good idea (that's my understanding anyway). Somebody who knows more than me will probably be along soon enough.

You are correct, it is not the rim size but the overall package of rim and tyre combined its circumference or diameter. You are also correct that is not generally a good idea to mix sizes on AWD, 4Wheel Drive, 4Motion vehicles. I would not mix sizes on any other vehicle either that is 2 wheel drive either unless specified by manufacturer. ABS Wheel Speed Sensors, sending conflicting information to ecu does not seem to be the brightest idea. Though I dare say for a minimal distance at a reduced speed. A suggestion to the original poster might be if it is found that the matching spare does not fit the spare wheel well, then he could mount the spare on the back door with a wheel mounting solution as can be found on the forum or to carry it secured inside the rear of the van.

Just found your thread shaun03! I had a look under my van as I have a trip to Morocco coming up. I run 245/45 R20 on the van (Came with them) but my spare similar to you is a 215/65 R16. I’m hoping it would do in the limping by category ! Has anyone any experience at limping by with a small R16 and 3 other R20’s (I know its more than just the R size)

On my wife's Micra, the spacesaver is 85% the diameter of the standard tytyre.
Although it can only be fitted on the rear, which is a serious wheel-swapping ballache if you get a puncture on the front.

Use the tyre size calculator and have a play. My van runs 235/55 18s, and upping the spare tyre size to 205/75 16 put it within 0.3% diameter of those on the van,

Limping to a garage shouldn’t be a problem - that’s what space savers do! However, if you’ve gone “big brakes” then the 16” rim will be an issue as they won’t clear the caliper

I think I might take up the previous advice and only use on the back which means doing a swap (lovely with those big ole 20”) but I’ve also got two cans of holts and GRAND PITSTOP 21 Pcs Tubeless Tire Gun Puncture Repair Kit with Mushroom Plug for Tyre Punctures and Flats on Cars, Motorcycles, ATV, Trucks & Tractors (15 Mushroom Plugs) Amazon.co.uk has peaked my interest as a backup

The AA use tyre guns for flats now, they rate at 50 miles at 50mph to get you to the tyre shop.
