Electric rear door? Power Latching issue?

Hi

When I used to slam my VW t6 rear door (it’s not barn doors but the other one I’m not sure of the name of) it used to make an electronic noise after it closed.

Now it doesn’t. How do I fix this? Could this mean someone has tampered with my door?

Thank you

I assume you mean the soft close power-latching function for the tailgate? I haven’t got it, but someone will chip in with their experience.

Power-latching would pull the tailgate the final few cm shut, so check if yours is now not closing fully. If it’s died in the closed position then it’ll be fine.

I wouldn’t think tampering would affect it, but likely the motor or the fuse having gone.

This sounds more like what it is. It seems to be locked - I can’t force it open anyway. I guess I need to take this to a dealer to repair?

I’m in Essex also. I bought it at VW Loughton a few years ago. I also need the air con sorted cos there’s sometimes a weird smell when I first start the engine

Not sure about the air-con, but any specialist would likely be able to diagnose that.

The soft-touch handle for the tailgate should still work - perhaps that’s the problem, which leads to the power-latching motor not turning (because it’s not receiving signal from a defective handle)? I’ve got PL myself but haven’t had a problem -
Others have, so have a read up and see.

One thing it could be is this:
Power-latching Woes

To get the tailgate open when power isn’t being supplied to the handle or power-latching motor, you’ll need to pull on the rod itself to free off the latch.

It still all works fine. I was just curious why it no longer makes the electric sound

Sorry rather than saying “fix” maybe I should have said “restore the previous behaviour”
Hah yeah I get you. I’m guessing the electric noise was power latching, so I’m now guessing it’s now not working.
Does your tailgate pull itself shut if you close it softly? Did it do that before?
If it’s no to these (and you don’t have power-latching) then ignore posts 2 through to 9

The old behaviour was I would slam it and momentarily after an electric noise would pull it completely shut.

Now when I slam it there is no noise but it still stays closed/locked.

I can open/close the door without issue and it is locked when I lock the van.

Sorry I’m confusing

Can you try closing it gently to see if a motor pulls it closed the last few centimetres?

3 minutes in is an example.

So I can hear the latch system when I open but when I gently close it doesn’t pull it shut. It definitely used to and that’s the behaviour I’m keen to restore

I might have wasted your time but not sure..

When the engine is running it works fine! It’s now working with the engine turned off too. This hasn’t worked in weeks so maybe I needed to open/close it gently with the engine running??

It’s continuing to work with the engine off now. Not sure why it ever stopped?
If I close mine ultra softly, I can defeat the power-latch and it’ll stay ajar.

Yours may have just been having an off day.

They are known to go, so keep an eye on it
