Electric hookup cable on door seals

My van has the 240 hookup under the rear of the van and it’s getting water inside it, I think it’s taking a hammering off the spray off the wheels as I’ve no mud guards. Plus it’s only a matter of time until it gets crunched on a kerb or something. (No I’ve not done that yet!) and it looks a bit crap hanging down there anyway.

I’m thinking take the socket off. Folding the wire up and tape it away for now as I’ll never be able to pull it back through to inside the van. Then inside the van just run a new cable in to the boot or under the cupboards temporarily until I can sort a new place for the socket.

If I’ve got a cable through the doors when I’m hooked up will it damage the door seals or the cable ?

Hopefully the gaps in your doors are way too small to accommodate a 3 core cable without damaging either the van or cable??

Why not take it in through a window (we always crack the windows open when camping).

I stupidly hadn’t considered that. I’ve got Dubflectas on so leaving the window open a bit isn’t an issue with rain either.

Smarty pants.

Thanks

Thought this was the most discreet & protected place to site the a.c. hook up. Good access point adjacent to run the protective conduit into the van with only 2 holes drilled for mounting the inlet plug. Well protected from road spray & weather. Appreciate its additional work to remove rear bumper..
But we'll worth the effort.20180124_162308.jpg

This is exactly where mine are located @Dream Chaser. If I could offer you a bit of advice based upon my own experience; cover the entire top of the unit, around the cable and inlet grommet, with silicone. Whilst they are not subject to road dirt and spray, when it rains the water will run down the panels and behind the bumper and will track down the cabling. This means water fills the socket from the top. Haven’t had any water in mine since doing that. I also added the extra step of drilling a small drain hole in the cap just in case there was any ingress.

Yes good pointer on sealing everything as watertight as possible. Fortunately the design of the plug housing on this Gwiss appliance inlet is double entry. so gland entry at rear then through a second inlet to the cable terminations. Hopefully should be good for the 'British summer'!!
