eGrille hook-up experience

Yeah, I've got one.

As yoy say, the aesthetic is good - very discreet - plus it's very unlikely you'd ever try to drive away with the EHU cable still attached (something I previously tried to do in a van that had the hook-up point under the rear bumper! 😱).

I can’t comment on the cost, as it was bundled into the total cost of the conversion, but I'm not sure if I'd choose it again tbh - reason being is that the catch needs a fair old whack to get the flap to open/shut and I'm not convinced this won't eventually lead to either the egrille itself failing or one of the grill clips breaking. Having said that, it's almost 3 years old and still wotking fine, plus it could just be an issue my my particular install.

Similar experience and thoughts to Bav, looks neat, but needs gentle use as feels like it could break at any moment, when plugging in or removing the EHU socket, also had to remove the flap on the EHU socket For it to fit.
I’d go rear bumper flap next time
There is a different type now on the market, can’t comment on their version, but think they are trade members on the forum, I’ve got the original one

The eGrille "lite" should overcome the hinge durability concerns as the VW badge is removable but there is a risk that someone will nick it or more probable - it would get lost...

If you're interested I will be selling an egrille lite kit, as I bought it and then went the stealth flap route as I fely it would be much easier for me to route a cable to where I wanted it through the rear rather than all the way from the front.

DM me if it floats your boat so to speak. probably £110 posted, rather it go to a good home.

cheers Ali

Yes, good point - the updated EHU socket design means that the flap doesn't fold back far enough. I had get the Dremel out and remove part of the flap so it'd fit.

I've got a vanplugs, yet to fit it (waiting for nice weather). I've seen the e-grille and they don't look as good as the vanplugs. The installation of the e-grille looks like a lot more work.

Picked up a secondhand eGrille on FB Marketplace for a good price so that's the route I'm taking... I had a quick look online and it looks like the bumper and grill need to be removed in one go and then they can be separated - is that correct?

I didn't separate mine, too much fiddling about with clips. If it's the base spec then they are in a single piece.

After foolishly tempting fate with the above comment, I recently tried to drive away with the EHU cable attached to the eGrill. 🤦‍♂️

TBF, I wasn't on a campsite - this was on my driveway and the van was parked nose-first, up against a wall. I tried to reverse a few feet (aware that the EHU cable was plugged in), but when I tried to drive forwards to return the van to its original position, the cable snagged under the front wheel and out popped the EHU cable... along with the male receiver part of the eGrill. 🤬

Fortunately, it was a simple repair (even for a cack-handed twonk) - like wiring a 3-pin plug and then the receiver just twisted back into place. The only "damage" was the loss of a small torsion spring that would otherwise pull the flap closed. 🙏

Its not your fault Bav. Continental drift caused your driveway to move by the time you were ready to move forward again. At least thats what I told the Missus some years back when I reversed her car into the house...

I've still this one for sale, so open to offers to a good home. Cheers Ali

I’m slowly gathering the tools (and confidence…) to start the job but looking at the current installation I may have to extend the power cable - any recommendations for waterproof/automotive junction boxes?
