Also I thought i read somewhere not to wire both terminals to the battery but connect black to an earth point, which did you do? Any issues? Thank you

That's right, connect the black(neg) to the chassis. I scrapped the paint a bit and attached to a handy point near the battery. See photo.

How did you get on in the end, I am about to do the same but I already have cables in the passenger side grommet

All went good. I managed to squeeze the cable through one of the grommets passenger side that comes out behind the battery. It was a squeeze. Another way would be to drop the black neg cable and just put the +ve red through one of the grommets to the battery.

just drop out the BLACK Neg cable.

use a chassis point near the charger.

just run the RED POS to the starter battery.

The black neg can then be put somewhere on the chassis, not needing to go through the firewall.
