Durite Smart Relay

Most of us on here are battery-battery converts. I can’t see how a programmable relay is going to help. Sure, it will disconnect the leisure battery and prevent it being damaged by voltage spikes but it won’t make your alternator continue charging when the starter battery gets to 80%

I been trying to find out more information before I make the plunge on battery to battery charger. My setup would be low power consumption /occasional useage.

It’ll still knacker your leisure battery, it’ll never get above 80% & be dead in 12 months.

There’s plenty of reading on the subject on here @Matt174

Durite 12V 200A Programmable Voltage Sensitive Smart Relay | Re: 0-727-43
The Durite smart relay capabilities now allow for use with the latest range of vehicles fitted with smart alternators and regenerative braking systems
  • 12 Volts, 200A Capacity.
  • Microprocessor control with 9 available programmes.
  • Manual override function
  • Suitable for split charging or battery saving duties
Has ayone fitted one of these yet ? i want to fit a liesure battery to my T6 and need some guidance

A bit beyond my knowledge base but I'm sure the experts and knowledgeable users can help out...The programs appear to be fixed time delays for starting the charge. Durite 12V 200A Programmable Voltage Sensitive Relay | 0-727-43 but it does appear to have a +ve trigger at terminal 86, so it would appear to work in the same way as a smart charger- draw from the starter forcing the alternator to kick in?

I'm waiting for a call back from the tech support guys to confirm.

Edit...The upshot is that the Durite will operate as described and does smooth out power delivery, but will not charge above 80%. So most of us will end up with a 30% usable charge (I didn't ask about a Lithium scenario).

So this isn't a quick fix for people like me where a standard Durite was fitted and was hoping for a simple solution. B2B chargers remain the gold standard.

So is a B2B charger a direct replacement for this then? Or would a setup using this need additional wiring to fit a B2B?

A B2B is an upgrade from this, to charge the battery to 95-100%. I have an existing non smart Durite that I hope to upgrade to a B2B this weekend using the existing wiring.

Yeah, that’s what I meant really, is it a straight swap? @Dellmassive has given me some reading to do on this and it seems assuming the wire and fuses sizes are the same and there is an ignition feed (which I think the smart relay should have) then it should be.

I need to do some checking on what exactly has been installed at the conversion.

It will be interesting to hear how you get on with the upgrade.

The existing wiring can be used. You will need the ignition live (Dell's post on ignition feed). The most difficult part (for me) is that my VSR cable runs from the engine to the battery in a rear cupboard so I will have to remove the VSR and join in the cable in the engine bay and then attempt to fit in in the cupboard with the battery, mains charger and distribution box...I already suspect it won't fit!

The post on the ignition feed was linked in to the feed I just read. I’m trying to read them in full before getting distracted and going off on a tangent :D

Sounds like your issue is more logistical than technical then. Good luck:thumbsup:

hi can i ask what is the best split smart charger to get for a AGM there seems there is a few out there looking at the Victron Cyrix but was thinking going with the Victron solar too unless there's a better kit out there thx in advance

Victron didn’t have a B2B charger when I fitted out my van, otherwise I would have fitted one. I have a Sterling 1230 pro, nothing wrong with it & it’s very adaptable for Lithium etc. If it goes wrong, I’d go Victron.

THANKS SALTY MUCH APPRECIATED I JUST THOUGHT GOING SOLAR WITH VICTRON WOULD KEEP IT ALL WORKING WELL TOGETHER
It will, Victron now do a B2B & that's the way I'd now go. I have a Victron solar controller & mains charger.

PS I'm not deaf:whistle:
