The springy steel “S” shaped thing built into the hinge and holds the door at different degrees of open has fractured. Can the be bought/replaced separately or is it a whole new hinge job?
Finaly got around to getting the Hinge/Check Strap on the drivers door fixed.
the new bracket comes Galv costed, and they wanted £300 odd to paint it - so i didnt bother.
not sure i I've got a pic of the old one - but it was basicaly snapped, so didnt hold the door open at all . . . it just swung back and smashed your leggs in. . . . very anoying.
I have an artists paintbrush and small jam jar with oil (ISO32 compressor oil which is SAE10 grade) and do all the hinges when I service the van (and our other vehicles) and particularly the check strap as it enters the hinge block. White lithium grease on the check strap roller.
This is what my late father did prior to the advent of spray oils. I’ve still got his GPO oiling bottles from when he was a telephone engineer - anyone heard of ‘Oil Dag’?
I have used spray oils but find it goes everywhere in the door jam and then attracts dirt etc
Greasing hinges, locks and check straps (strictly speaking these aren't check straps, although their function is the same) used to be part of an annual service but is now something garages rarely bother with.
