Double Floor Rails Vs Single

I can't seem to find a definitive answer to what should be a simple question.

What do double floor rails offer over single ones apart from the option to fit a table?

Looking at the used market for a set of rails, most of the silver trims are in terrible condition, anyone have the part numbers for them or an idea of what a new set would cost from VW?
