Does the removal of OEM screen/head unit require special keys?

I plan on installing my Alpine Halo 11 this weekend on my T6.1 and the documentation shows a requirement for OEM VAG keys to remove the stereo.
I have seen videos tho that show folks undoing t* screws.

Do I need the VAG keys?
