thanks
Daniel

OK news to me.
The reason I thought 5KW is excessive is that my Wallas is rated for 900W - 1800W as a heater, the thermostat is set at minimum, even at -12 degC with the roof down.

, thanks for the replies, but will it fit under the van :) , I’m assuming yes at this point if the standard is 5kw.
Thanks Daniel

That is the coolant heater - totally different beast!

Standard fitting for the T5 was the Webasto 3.5Kw Air Top 3500ST.
Standard fitting for the T6 is the Eberspächer Airtronic M2 which is 4Kw.
5Kw is far too big. 4Kw is the maximum, most people are happy with the 2Kw offerings.
There are various brackets available on Ebay - it would help to have a link/picture, some are only suitable for 2Kw others like the oem offering will support up to the 5.5Kw. ( the 3.5/3.9/4/5/5.5Kw Webastos are all the same size and weight)

5kW sounds massive. I don't know if its comparable but we have a 5kW multi-fuel stove which is more than capable at heating half our house!

yep i have a 5kw installed on mine in the oem locations with the ebay brackets.

I bought the 5kw by accident ! It is physically bigger than the 2 kw but will fit on a standard mounting plate under the van on the chassis. The inlet and outlet pipes are bigger than the 2kw but I still managed to fit the inlet in the drivers footwell and the outlet through the floor behind the drivers seat. I have found so far that the heater works fine in a swb at lower settings. Long term effect of running at low power remains to be seen, but on my previous van with a 2kw planar, I only ever ran that on the lowest setting and that worked fine

What do you mean " standard mounting plate"? standard oem or the flimsy 2 bolt offering or the heavier 6 bolt one? There is a substantial difference between the 3!

As others have said 5KW is huge for a transporter & will probably struggle with short cycling. We have a 2KW Webasto in ours and spend 4-5 weeks a year in the Alps skiing. We’ve never had to use the full capacity of the 2KW. As a comparison, we have a 2KW electric fan heater & that normally runs on the 1KW setting. Running a large heater at low settings presents its own problems.

A 5kW heater will fit the california sub assembly with no issues, the holes line up with no additional work required, but I agree that it is too much for the van volume.
I have a 2kW heater fitted, but I needed to add some spacers between the heater and the cradle to centre the inlet/outlet with the ductwork either side.
I had it running on tickover (lowest setting 1Hz/1450rpm) overnight last weekend up at Dubs in t'dales (5-6 degrees overnight outside) and with the controller set at 19C, the controller (mounted above drivers door in the handle cutout) was thinking ambient was 25C but actual temp in the van (on a digital thermometer) was 16C. The casing temp of the heater was reporting 89-90C. It ticked over like that two nights running with no issues.
I need to refill the tank to see how much diesel it used for those two nights (I can't see the level in my tank, it's mounted under the van so need to brim it off again to check consumption)
If you have a 5kW heater under there the minimum running temp would be too hot to stand in the van and you'd end up turning it off and on again to allow the van to cool down a bit.

@oldiebutgoodie - the mounting plate was a two bolt mounting plate from eBay but certainly not flimsy - item 373020155662 - mounted on 2 of rivnuts in the chassis

I certainly would not mount a 5Kw on one of those - they flex too much and will work harden and fracture. I would not recommend them for a 2Kw either.
The oem offering is rubber mounted and is very substantial.
The 6 hole version is 3mm steel and the 2 hole 2.75mm. The 2 hole version has a built-in failure point where the metal fatigue develops.

Would the mounting bracket supplied with this kit be ok?

Personally no.
I know that a lot of people use them but to my way of thinking that is going to be subject to vibration and stress with the van bouncing on the road surfaces.
This is the area that will be subject to all the stress.
