Dead starter

So, over the last week I’ve had a starter issue with my T6.

Every time I was starting the starter motor was getting harder and harder to turn over. I purchased a new battery but this didn’t make much difference. One evening it completely died and I had to get recovered by the AA. There was power on the dash, lights worked etc but when turning the ignition no starter…..The AA recovered me to one of their ‘approved’ garages. They sent me a breakdown of what they diagnosed and I had to pay £40. They quoted me £1200+ to replace battery (I had actually refitted the old battery as I thought this may of been an issue, so I explained I already had a battery) , new starter motor, and replace vee belt. I got a weird vibe from this garage - you’ve got to follow your instincts if you know what I mean!

After a bit of searching I found a new starter motor available from euro car parts, and in stock. So I bought it. And with some (limited experience gave it a go).

For anyone in the same situation this is what I did;
Disconnect battery
Syphon coolant out of coolant bottle - in to a 2litre bottle
Remove the 3 hoses attached to it and remove from engine bay
Put a rubber bung in the large hose connected to the bottom of the coolant bottle.
Cable tie hoses to fan housing, remove washer bottle neck and cable tie out of the way too.
Push the black plastic cover on the top of the starter motor to the right to reveal a 10mm nut. Undo nut.
Push the red clip down on the electrical connector and push right (spray a bit of wd on it first).
Undo the 18mm nut which is the top fixing for the starter motor.

From underneath;
Remove the bottom tray, I think it was 6 or 7 13mm bolts
Remove the 18mm fixing for the starter motor - this is behind a cable bracket, which I think was 13mm.

Old one out, new one in.
(Found that the earth on the old one had separated).
Put it all back.
Refill the coolant reservoir.

When putting the cable connection on the top I used a Dremel to clean up the connection.

Battery back connected - started a treat 👍🏻

Hope this helps anyone with the same issue!!

That strap has likely gently corroded away until the point it couldn't handle the current then it's gone quite spectacularly as you can see bright copper where it finally went (as it hasn't had time to corrode) and there is copper splashed all over the housing and bracket as well :oops:
