“Crunchy” shifting

I’m not mechanically minded so please bear with me.

I purchased a 2023 t6.1 from Arnold Clark 5 weeks ago. It had done 6k miles, it’s now 8.5k. It’s a 5 speed 110bhp. I’d come from a transit connect and before that a polo GTI.

Initially when I first drove it I thought the shifting was strange, but just put it down to being a new vehicle. It’s quite hard for me to explain without sounding like an idiot, but I’ll give it a go. The gears feel quite clunky when shifting, especially the lower gears. When passing through the neutral position there feels like a lot of friction & sometimes it requires more force than I believe should be required.

Sometimes when I start the van in the morning and shifting into first the gears grind, this is before I even move the van. It’s like it’s out of alignment and grinding, it doesn’t feel good considering it’s such a new van. Several times is not went into first and makes that horrendous screeching sound and few times I’ve ground the gears terribly due to it not going into gear.

The clutch also feels a bit “grindy” sorry for my lack of appropriate Laungage. 😂

I’ve booked it into a VW specific Arnold Clark a week on Wednesday, it’s covered under their 60 days warranty I’ve been told. I just thought I’d run it by you guys to check if this is normal? I’m really aware of it and continually have to be very precise with my shifting. It’s taking the enjoyment out of driving and the appreciation away from the otherwise glorious vehicle.

All feedback appreciated.

My 110 5 speed box doesn't behave like that. VW have never mastered the art of the refined change on their manual boxes, but even that notwithstanding it shouldn't be crunching or giving a feeling of graunching through the stick.

Does your shifting feel quite smooth?

I’m concerned they’re going to tell me it’s within acceptable standards and I’ve nothing to challenge them on.

The shifting on my wee polo GTI was an absolute dream compared to this.

Its a slightly loose and notchy shift, but that's not unusual for a veedub. But it's far from woeful, slips into gears without undue effort. No crunchy sounds or feelings though the stick.

If it doesn't meet your expectations for a gear change on a new vehicle (under 10k miles) then they need to fix it. It's not like you're a new driver.

Smack their bums and kick up a stink

Yeah something isn’t right with mine. I’ll see what they say when I take it in

I’ll be sure to kick up a stink but smacking bums might be a bit of a stretch. I’ll read the room when I’m in the garage and decide if a bum smacking is acceptable.

The staff at MX5 dealers, Dominic, Quentin and Tristram, like having their bums smacked,

How is the gear selection when the engine is off?? If it's fine, it's got to be clutch related.

Your van is still under VW's warranty regardless of Arnold Clarks 60 day one.
