Commercial Tyres

Hi All,

A numptey question here as my technical knowledge is lacking but do I need commercial rated tyres and properly load rated tyres if running a LWB T32 Kombi (not converted). Used for pleasure and not for carrying heavy work loads. Looking at 103 load rating but didn't know if they had to be commercial also to be legal / insurance purposes (as many just say for SUV cars).

second question is that van is lowered about 35mm. Am I correct is saying that at this height, the overall height of the tyre is not an issue with rubbing but the width of the tyre is? Current set-up is 265/40/20 all round but get rub on the nearside tyre on full lock: rub is on the inner arch on that side. Changing to 245/45/20 all round to alleviate this for summer use and then was going to go 235/55/18 all round for some winter tyres to protect the alloys and allowing for some decent winter tyres for European Alpine driving in the winter.

TIA.

The 103 load rating is what you must comply with. C rated tyres are an option for commercially used vehicles as they are rock hard, able to withstand being rammed up the kerb all day long and last for ever, therefore more cost effective on a working vehicle driven by an employee that couldn't care less.

They’re great for terrible roads and rough terrain. My travels following the SatNav have taken me on some ‘interesting’ routes and I’ve never needed to be concerned about a tyre failure.

Also I would have thought there are not many (if any) commercial rated tyres in R20

My local DPD driver often mentions he suffers with feelings of inadequacy when out on his 16” wheels.
Personally I don’t get the whole lower suspension / bigger wheel thing, it just messes with geometry, wears components out quicker and makes maintenance harder.
However I accept that a good part of this Forum seems to be about said things.

Yup! I know it’s a personal thing, but I’ve never seen the problem with 17” Devonports and some quality all season tyres. Ticks every box.

If 16inch wheels cause feelings of inadequacy to your DPD driver, I am pretty sure he may have many more problems than that;)
