It comes out by pulling but it’s really really tight. You can try prying it from lower edge with plastic trim tools. But probably easiest to take the glove box out, you can then help the removal by pushing from rear.

Glove box comes out by first removing the small trim panel facing the door from the end of the dasboard and then undoing torx screws in the glove box and along it’s front bottom edge, 7 in total I think.

Magic. Thank you

What are you guys fitting in place of this panel please ?
VanX do a panel that fits into that cubby hole. If you ring them you can select what fittings you want. I have a double usb port, a 12v socket and a 3 way switch fitted to mine.

Thanks for that. Just out of curiosity what is the three way switch controlling?

Cigarette lighter sockets are a proper PITA

Mine appears to be permanently live. If I get the cover off will I find a switched live in there? or do I need to wire in a switch into a replacement panel?

PS: o/p hope you solved your problem.

They are perm live and there is no switched cable behind. The easiest way is to drop a new cable to the fuse panel below the gear lever and use a piggy-back fuse off one of the switched central fuses. I’ve done that with both of mine and swapped the bottom one to a USB socket while at it.

Next up: which tool(s) do I need to remove the panel without damage?

For this one by the gear lever:

You just pull out the whole cubby hole that the socket is attached to. You may need to get a trim tool in the edge if it’s not been removed before. It is simply held by 2 catches that hold the prong on the left of this pic:

The power socket has a connector a few inches along like this:

For the dash top socket like this:

You need either the correct VAG removal tool (expensive) or some long outward opening circlip pliers. Half way down inside the socket you will see 2 small opposing tabs, these need to be pushed in then the metal part of the socket can be lifted out. The remainder can then be removed. Some people have been able to do this with 2 small screwdrivers or even a power plug that just happened to push in the tabs. Thankfully work had some suitable circlip pliers for mine!
