CHANGING THE BATTERY ON A 2016 T6

Hi everyone,

I've just purchased a 2016 T6 Highline 150bhp BMT van. I'm assuming as the engine is Euro 6, it has the stop start capability ? However, if it has, it appears to have been permanently disabled, which doesn't bother me. I need to change the existing battery which is a Yuasa EFB YBX7096, as it appears to be knackered & am thinking of replacing it with an AGM of the same size & capacity. Changing the battery myself isn't a problem, but am I right in thinking that the change needs to be programmed into the VCOM ?? if so, it probably needed to be done by someone with the ability to do this ?

Please excuse my ignorance, I've been driving a T4 for the last 22 years & the electronics have advanced somewhat !! Any advice appreciated.

There is a function to programme the battery in VCDS, but in all the cars I have owned with stop start I have never noticed any difference after programming. I replaced the one on my T6 a few weeks ago and I did input the manufacturer and capacity.

My stop start also appears permanently disabled.

Many thanks for your reply Vedubber. So probably if I fit a new battery without programming it in, it isn't going to do any significant harm to the new battery ? I've got a multimeter which I use often, so I can check the state of charge I guess.

I'm wondering if i should buy a VCDS scanner tool ? although I seem to remember someone warning me to be careful what I buy, as some of them will come up with all sorts of erroneous error codes ?? I'm not sure what would be the best one to get ?

no it shouldn’t cause any issues. As long as you have replaced the battery like for like. Eg AGM / EFB and the AMPS match you should be ok.

Your duff SB may well be the reason the stop/start isn't stopping and starting.

A search of the forum will relieve your ignorance. There’s plenty of definitive information available at your fingertips. Search for @Dellmassive’s “How I done it” threads. There’s one dedicated to changing the starter battery.

Yes, I hadn't considered that. I've just lost power steering to add to the problems too. I need to check the auxilary belt tomorrow. If that's failed, I don't want it causing cambelt damage. I suppose the loss of power steering too could be linked to the electrical system & could be caused by battery failure ?

I have had a similar issue on a previous VW where I would get a start stop error and the power steering would drop out when the error was showing, this only showed up a voltage low issue on a diagnostics. Turned out to be a faulty voltage regulator like this

Many thanks for all your replies & suggestions. After looking carefully this morning, the auxilary belt is off the pulleys, so that accounts for the flat battery & power steering problems. Thank god that didn't happen on the motorway last week. There is no protective under tray fitted either, but assume it would have had one when new ? Anyway, it will be going to the garage on our trailer. Definitely needs a serious going over.

Generally kombis get factory fitted undertrays panel vans do not

Thanks for letting me know that Pauly. I thought some lazy mechanic had forgotten to refit it. Mine is a panel van, but I’m definitely going to need one, as the van has to go up & down a very rough bumpy track every day. I’m guessing I should be able to get one somewhere for a reasonable price ?

I think this is down to the mood of the factory tbh. My 2017 Highline PV came came with full under trays. Dunno if the Highline had any bearing.
