Camping Options

Been camping for over thirty years now and loved every minute, had a few caravans, numerous tents and even a trailer tent, all good, but the camper van is the best (in my opinion) but lack of space can be a problem, and if your touring you need to set up quick, and packup quick, but if your there for a week or more, you need space and a bit of luxury so we have a few options to hopefully cater for all scenarios.

First up is the Fiamma privacy room. You obviously need a Fiamma roll out awning for this option which can be used on it`s own as just a sun awning with no sides but with the Privacy Room it converts into a small enclosed awning. Set up time is quick, about ten mins once you get the hang of it but downside is you cant drive away without packing up the whole thing so good for overnight stops. Pic below.

Next up is the Vango Faros 2 Air awning. About the same internal space as the Privacy Room but with the ability to drive away and better weather proofing as there are no gaps and a sewn in ground sheet makes for a better all round awning. Set up time is still pretty good at 10-20 mins. Pic Below.

Long stays are a breeze with the Vango Galli 3, huge interior space, four air beams give great stability even without the guy lines which are only really needed in high winds but is good with just the front and back web straps, we prob use this awning the most as its so good. Set up time about half an hour. Downside is it`s quite heavy. Pic below.

And finally for quick overnight stops we just use windbreaks with the roll out awning. These are Quest Screen Shield windbreaks, about 6ft high and really solid with the aluminum poles plus guys if you need them, Quickest of all set ups, 10 mins or less (depending on how many beers you have had :)

Awesome.

We looking at a similar3 setups,

1: Over night, wild camp style. Ie park for night etc (no external kit)

2: short trip, say couple of days. This will be the railsail, windreaks and camp chairs.

3: for longer trips, will be the Vango Gali 3 drive away

.

We have a driveaway touring air, but for the forum two nighters the Fiamma does the job, just bought a fiamma rafter Pro though, having been caught out with loads of the wet stuff at the 'summer' meet, even with the fiamma at a 30 degree downward slope. £60 well spent. Hopefully Busfest will be an Indian Summer weekend, bod bod...isn't it!

Nice. We have similar choices.

If it's just an overnight stay, we use the Comfortz side-panels. A bit smaller than the Fiamma as they hang from the rails, but works to dump stuff into and have somewhere to shelter from the rain.

We have the Cinch pop-up hub for the shortest stay, up in seconds, down in a little more if you can't remember how to fold it up!

An Outwell Darlington does for longer stays. Small enough to pack away neatly but big enough for a good external space.

Sometimes we use the wind-out, with or without the sides, with the Outwell, if we need some extra space for camping with friends.

We've just actually bought a larger awning second hand, A Khyam Motordome sleeper, as the kids don't want to share the poptop anymore.

Overnight wildcamp style is prob the hardest with no outside kit, Once you have your bedding in (we use Duvalay sleeping bags which are very small when packed up) with home pillows (can`t sleep on anything else) and two folding chairs and a table, it takes up a fair bit of space at the back but it can be done (we have done it). You can also pull the top bed down and use that for storage at night as long as there is only two of you using the downstairs bed, we also have a Labrador dog, shes huge :D

Then to throw into the mix if the campsite only has water and nought else we take the Joolca and a pop up to shower...(soon to be updated with a Joolca en-suite).

Thanks for this - really useful, especially for a newbie! We picked up our first van on Saturday and loving it so much already. We are looking to get a Fiamma 45s awning fitted in the next couple of weeks and like the look of the Vango Faros 2 set up shown in your picture. Stupid question (and will just go to show how much of a newbie we are!) - presumably the Fiamma and Vango Faros are compatible?! And final stupid question - how do they connect?

If you get a Fiamma roll out awning there is a channel (2) on the front to which you can connect any drive away awning with a drive away kit. It consists of a Kador strip and a fig of 8 channel, sounds complicated but it isn`t. Google drive away kit or look on U tube for lots of info on how to fit it.

Great, thank you!

Which bell tent is that?

And do you find any difficulty with it being big/unusual when you book sites?

We have a 750kg box van trailer for event work which we'd probably use camping, ideally with our large canvas tent, but I'm never quite sure if modern campsites are set up for something that looks like a California (but is a Caravelle) with a trailer, sun awning and large tent...

@roadtripper....its the 5m Glawning with van connector. It does take up quite an area, porobably 6m protrusion from the van so a decent area. We do check with the campsite prior to booking. I wouldn't even consider some of the smaller and more regimented sites tbh. The woodburner may be an issue on some sites too but it is a gamechanger in terms of heat, cooking and drying out clothes when its wet!
