Bumper protector adhesive

Hi all,

Removed my old black plastic bumper protector over the weekend. Now I’m not sure if it was the original one fitted by VW but the adhesive left behind is not budging.

I’ve tried using a plastic trim removal tool to scrape it off, I’ve tried tar and glue remover again to no avail. The stuff seems to be a slimey gooey mess.

I’ve attached a couple of photos. Anybody been faced with this stuff before and got any tips?

I don't im afraid. I have the waffle type and have used it to remove the Redline decals on my 6.1.

You do realise that voids the Redline warranty?

I got the extended warranty by adding an extra red line.

Its only the bonnet one I removed as it was getting tatty. The side window ones are still present.

Removed the bonnet one on ours too as it looked cheesy but liked the window ones to the point of a light mod... can you see it.... I know what you're thinking and it's not "you sad bast" but yep, more red tape, just what we need.

I know this will sound weird but…….even when glue/tar remover won’t get it all off, I use……. ‘Aldi own brand furniture polish’. I swear by it. I’ve had some really stubborn sticky marks on the car, kitchen cabinets blah blah and it must be something in it that breaks up the adhesive but it’s certainly worked for me on most offenders.

Try g-technic tar and glue remover. Gets the adhesive off the wheels where previous weights have been. Goes gooey then you scrape it off.

That 3M tape rolls up pretty easily with your fingers if you use a hair drier to warm it - need fingers that aren't heat sensitive though

Surprisingly WD40 works on things like old masking tape that nothing else will shift, might be worth a try cheap and plentiful

White Sprit, a gentle plastic scraper, a lot of rubbing with an old rag, and some T-Cut to finish off worked to get the tape off where my side window deflectors were stuck on.

I was going to suggest white spirit too. A lot of solvents soften the adhesive but then evaporate before you get chance to actually remove the glue.
White spirit is always my first choice for this. Its not always quite as potent but, as it stays wet for longer it can be a good choice.

Degumming wheel has worked a treat, and made somewhat light work of what was looking like a painful and time consuming task.

Although since removing I have now come to notice my bumper isn’t straight to the tailgate! It never ends does it.

I’m not sure whether I’ve caused this removing the protector or whether the protector was just masking it?

Easy way to find out is to put a new bumper protector on there and see if you still can see what looks like a bloke crouching reflection.

Where it's sitting higher it's come off the clips, common when pulling a bumper protector off as it lifts the plastic. If you undo the fastenings in the wheel arch and under the bumper at the back it should be just about loose enough to manipulate it back into place without having to take the bumper fully off.
