Battery Charging

All depends on which charging system you have on your van.... is it factory or retro fit?

Depends on the setup then. On mine when on EHU the mains powers a charger that only charges the leisure battery. When driving the B2B charger charges the leisure from the starter battery. Reading your thread has made me realise that when my van is garaged nothing is charging the starter battery. Hmm....

This is how, I think, mine works - EHU goes to a charger in the van which is connected to the vehicle battery.
The vehicle battery has a BTB charger connected to the leisure battery.
So.......the charger charges the vehicle battery which in turn charges the leisure battery.

Are you sure the charger doesn’t go to the leisure? If you are at a campsite say for 3 days and running the fridge etc your leisure battery could go flat as the B2B only works when the van is moving, that’s why the mains charger normally charges the leisure . The B2B is for when EHU isn’t available so that it tops the leisure up whilst driving

We have a Sterling B2B which seems to work on a timer system so it works when both moving and parked.
Must admit I do find it all very strange

I’ll need to do a bit of reading up on my B2B then. I thought they only passed power to the leisure battery if the van was moving, otherwise the B2B could completely drain the starter battery if it kept passing power to the leisure whilst parked

All depends on the set up like others are saying.

I have a retro system to my design. Ctek charges leisure batteries whilst van is running. Connect to EHU a charger will charge leisure, then when full swap over to charge the starter battery. If not on EHU the solar panel does exactly the same through the same charger.

I believe that most do just as you say, I think it is only the Sterling that has a different system I think it works on voltages and a timer rather than a switch.

Thanks @Nigel W , Hadn’t realised that
I have a Sargent box in the van and can send the charge to either the vehicle or leisure battery, it was only when the Sterling B2B charger was retro installed to get over the 80% charge issue that this charging of both batteries at the same time when on EHU was discovered.
Must admit I do feel a little uncomfortable charging both that way but I was assured that it is just fine.
The Sterling B2B charger does seem to be a good piece of kit and so far I haven’t had any problems

@DaveyB interested in this swap over from leisure to starter when leisure is full. What’s involved in setting that up?
Sorry, I'm not an auto electrician so really don't know. I told my installer what I wanted to achieve, and they set about determining how to do it with various relays and components. You could always call them; ALM Electrical Solutions in Redditch 01527 521600, ask for Kevin.

Thanks Davey, I’ve actually got a good mains trickle charger in the garage that I used to use on the bike, I’ll probably just start hooking that up to the starter battery when the van is not in use until I work out if there’s a simpler way. My EHU point is beside my battery anyway

Sounds like a plan.
My EHU is tucked up under the rear bumper, also have a 240v outlet in the same location, so that I can have a trailing lead running into the awning for a slow cooker, so that we don’t have to leave a door/ window open when we are all out on the water for the whole day. Then when we get back to the van, there is a lovely hot and moorish stew or something ready for us to tuck into.
