I saw a few posts asking what to do with the cubby hole above head in the Transporter T6.1 and I saw a youtube video where someone mounted the diesel heater controller so I thought I would have a crack at it myself.

To mount it I designed a panel to sit behind modeled off the insert that came out:

then fix a screw through the backplate of the comfort controller, through the 3D printed front plate and then into the threaded holes of the panel sat behind which clamps it all together.

I find with mine that nearer the bed is better. A truer reflection of the temperature during the night that you're experiencing plus being able to control it whilst lay in bed.

I mine fitted on the B pillar.

And have the modem and APP.

I love playing with the heater from under the duvet.

Can you still get the modem and app? I cant find a definitive answer....@Planar pete may be the answer. I'd forgotten about him.

Something I was just investigating myself, but then I saw the app looks like it was made in the 90's.

Yes you can get it....

@Planar Pete fitted mine, it comes with the wire loom and the LTE patch antenna.

it takes A SIM card, PAYG or other, I have a Smart SIM, 30day contract. £4 a month.

The App is basic and just send a text string to your SMS app, then you send it. It's basic but works very well, in in very remote areas...... If you can send a text, it will work.

Mine...

You can start/stop.

Set timers,

Change mode..

FYI, I normally use Power mode #1 for 1hr as an example.

Or if you and it's getting chilly, we fire it up before we get back.

And the. Best bit.... Winter time, wake and it's freezing. No worries, turn on the heater from your bed... And the bus is nice and warm and defrosted.

Well with the upgrade IMHO.

It looks great, but in winter I like to reach out of bed into the cold with one hand and press the button then retreat into the sleeping bag until the van is toasty.

The modem is quite expensive, especially if you just want to switch on the heater to preheat the van. I just used one of these,

Ring or send a text and the heater fires up on full blast for 2 hours. Just needs a live and earth and two wires run to the heater. You can't control the heater, only switch on and off, but probably enough for most people.

Does it just fit inline with the controller? Do you think I could just throw it up in that cubby hole as there is a large void.

That looks interesting. Does it allow the heater to shut down properly or just kill the power dead?

It's safe and does the full shut down. So no issues with improper shut downs.

There are two wires heat shrnked together at the heater, you just connect to them. Then when they are sorted together for a second or two, the heater will fire up on full blast for a couple of hours. If you have an older heater before about 2021'ish, then it starts on its last setting. When the wires get shorted again. It will switch off the correct way.

You could also install a switch near your bed area and run the wires back to the heater. No getting out of bed to switch the heating on. You can also run a switch to that gate opener and have the best of both worlds, bed access and remote access!

Yes, it comes with a Y cable that plugs into the controller cable, then the modem and controller plug into that.

The unit is small, prob 60*50*20mm and comes with a 1m antenna lead and small patch antenna.

My modem is next to the D2 controller behind the B pillar plastics and the antenna is stuffed up in the headlining.

Works fine....

It been running for about a year now.

When @Planar Pete installed it he put in a GIFGAFF PAYG Sim to get going, then I swapped it out for a Smarty, Vodafone, Lebara SIM..... Whatever really.

Yes the APP is basic. But it works well when your in the sticks.

Id like to see a new WIFI/BT version at some point, as we have WiFi in the van and all love a BT app.

But for now, this is the best we can get, and in my opinion definitely worth it.

Last weekend at BTCC Brands Hatch I must have played with the heater 20times and didn't touch the controller once, all via the App.

I have a wifi solution for that problem for me. I have a renogy one m1 display in the car and the app, which is connected to the vans wlan router. It has three remote controllable relays.

They are programmable via scenes, so if I have wlan via my vlan router, I can start and stop the heater from where I want. I did the same with the newly retrofitted Webasto water heater via the telestart input signal, which works identical to the autotherm input, see above. There are a lot of more possibilities, e.g. make it depended from temperature in van or even from temperature in my watercompartment to prevent from freezing. You can mount a lot of sensors to the m1 via zigbee protocol. Of course it is to expensive to buy the renogy one m1 (I payed 130€) just for the switch on/off feature. But if it is just one of lot of features you use, then it makes sense.

If you think the ‘90’s app is bad what does that make me, I was made in the ‘60’s???

Would that work with an Eberspacher heater as well?
