Automatic Braking

2023 6.1 150 DGS, I know it brakes by itself while the cruise control is set, bt the other day I was driving very slowly through a narrow entrance which I've done several times, It always activates the parking sensor but this time it braked itself, is this normal as I didn't think it had auto collision avoidance ?? cheers guys

It happens from time to time. It can be quite a shock can make someone wonder what the " " is going on. It may be the radar activating the brakes Collision Avoidance System. Mine does it occasionally if I stray closer to an object than it thinks wise and then sees it as a Hazard. The rest of the time it takes no notice. Probably having a P---- or something.

Thanks guys, every day is a school day, I take it won't brake itself if say someone pulls out infront of you during normal driving.

Yea when the cruise is on and being used it will keep a set distance from the vehicle ahead and brake/accelerate by itself, but you're saying if ACC is on but not set, ie I'm controlling throttle/brake it should still apply brakes by itself in an emergency, I've had it beep at me in this scenario but not brake.

Beeping is a warning. It will eventually brake if it does not detect avoiding action.

Yes, it will brake by itself as long as the object is sensed. That’s called automatic braking. There is also City Emergency Braking which has different parameters. It will also automatically intervene if it thinks you are not braking hard enough. And also apply the brakes after a collision. What you described at the beginning is manoeuvre braking which is using the PDC - it’s pretty violent when it kicks in! The manual has some good info on all the systems and the limitations. None of them are likely to prevent the collision, just make it less severe.

Well I have had my vehicle since 2019 new and it has done this 4 or 5 times in that time used to do it when going past some lay-bys that suddenly end abruptly and on one occasions did it at very slow speed down hill on the off road trackway to our home and it was a fern that upset it. Its hormonal ! I had it turned off for a little while but then relented as I am not the only one who drives it.

It can be really brutal I wonder what the following drivers feel as they usually follow too close. Must scare then witless ot they want to punch your head off!
It braked so hard, it felt like I'd hit a concrete block or something. Weird feeling.

The very first time it happened to me i was passing the Secondary Schools in Chippenham and just passing a pull in for people going to the school like long lay-buys that had a sudden end and wham, it practically stood on its nose. I immediately though F what have I done and immediately started altering the controls looking for a red warning light I was only goings lowly and then it dawned on me what it was and felt a twit but on other occasions nothing happened at all. No discernable difference in approach?

Mines only really done it when there has been a "person"... but not sure it's actually that clever.

The van has done it a couple of times when reversing into a space a bit quick haha.
