Good morning folks,

I have had my T6.1 for 2 years, and only got this problem when I first had it serviced, so i'm guessing the previous owner removed some oil perhaps.

Anyway, the light would come on after about 65 miles, and the dipstick hatched area looks fully covered in oil even when cold. After looking on You Tube to find possible remedies, I removed half a litre, and yesterday, I went 85 miles before the light came on. Of course, when you open and close the bonnet the light goes off, but my question is this :

If the van has about 7 litres of oil in it, how much can I safely remove ?

Thanks

I had these fun & games following my van's first oil change.

Not sure how many litres of oil this equates to, but just make sure the oil level isn't above the mid-point of the hatched area on the dipstick and you'll be fine.

I suffer this.

I corrected the oil level, it now sits perfectly halfway between the marks on the dipstick.

Nevertheless, after a similar mileage to yours the lying bastid gives me the same warning.

I just ignore it now. There is a software update that helps, but which isn't a universal cure to the sporadic bullsheet lies the van tells me.

I had different after my last service at dealership after 300 miles a warning came up on the screen check oil, it didn’t even show on the dip stick put a litre of oil in and now in the middle of section on dipstick.

I had the same problem some time back. With the dipstick showing at the 'full mark' I took out about 1/3. Now running at 2/3 full. No further lightups.

I took out 500ml, the warning reappeared once more after that, but never to be seen again. Half way up crosshatching now, good as gold, well more black really...

In case anyone is interested, I took out a further half litre, and on a run to Cornwall last weekend, I got to 98 miles before the light came on. The oil level is half way up the hatched area on the dipstick, so I don't know whether taking more out will help or cause a problem for me.
I asked VW about the software update but i'm not optimistic of a response tbh.

You sound like you're in the same position as me. I just ignore it - I've always checked my levels manually every week or prior to a long journey, because I'm an old pilot.

The warning is mildly annoying, but now I know it for what it is (ie, a load of old bollards) I just ignore it. It doesn't bug me enough to want to spend time or money chasing a solution,

Thanks for the reply Sasquatch. I just want to make sure that I can ignore the warning and continue with my journey. When the warning goes away simply by lifting the bonnet, I had assumed as much although there must be some link to the starting oil level.

I had it once.
Pulled to a service station and wiped the dipstick a few times (so lets say a few ml's).

Didn't appear again including all the way back home (>100 miles).
I've had an oil change since and the oil is on the max mark. Message hasn't appeared.

...and me. Exactly the same. I had it serviced recently and had the indie garage that did thr work fill it to just under half on thr dipstick after the warning appeared a week or two before the service. No joy, every 60 miles I get same. I know it's on half way mark but still comes up. Someone suggested draining the oil fully then popping ignition on but not starting it for 30mins and then refilling to half way on dipstick and that will 'apparently' let the ECU convince itself that it is sorted. I dunno, seems a bit random but might be worth a try. I know the oil level is good so just ignore warning and check it from time to time. Be nice to get it sorted finally though

Really annoying that VW has no interest in acknowledging the issue.
Hi, I’ve recently bought a t6.1 70 plate with 21,000 miles and all these issues are the same for me, where as I’ve actually gone down the route of having everything I can possibly do/work on. Id had it at VW specialist garage twice and obviously seeing this forum before hand I knew what I needed to start with, software update. Done. 70 miles light back on. Emptied/topped up to less then half on the dipstick, checked for weather it was diluting correctly. Fine and done. 70 miles back on. So then I took it the VW SMG who which declared after saying what it’s had done already that it was a faulty sensor… just got the van back yesterday.. drove 70 miles lights back on a AGAIN! At this point I’ve more or less given up, I luckily haven’t had to of paid a penny to have had any of this done. But for all people wanting to spend money on getting all of the following done I wouldn’t go through the time, stress and money it costs I think judging off the fact it’s been a recurring issue since day dot not just with my van but with these certain model vans. We all know it’s running absolutely fine it’s just not ideal.

That's why I just ignore it. I've established there is no actual problem so can do so without fretting. It's a Class 1 Ballache but I've got more important things to get excited about.

BTW, if the dealer made a misdiagnosis and fitted a sensor it didn't actually need I'd be asking for my money back. That why I traditionally pay for such things on my CC, it becomes the CC's problem if the garage whittles about refunding.

Exactly, the cost of the sensor was sorted by through the warranty I have still 👍🏼

The 'oil too high' warning has come on in my 22 plate 150dsg. Had a service on 25th May and it came on Friday afternoon.
Rang my dealer for advice but I'd missed the service department. They had closed the weekend.
I'm currently in France so will need to ignore it until I get home.... I did pop the bonnet and check the oil level, it is just above max. However, the warning has now gone off so I assume I'm ok to drive home later this week....

The warning message is deleted from the dash when the bonnet is opened and closed, so in checking it you have cleared the 'fault' but it will probably pop up again in around 60 miles. If the oil level isn't excessive (check it properly on a level surface etc) then you'll be fine to drive for now. If it's high on the dipstick, then worth dropping a half a litre for the time being.

I spoke to my VW workshop fella (who himself has 5 T6’s!) He said it’s simply an overfilling that trips the sensor. So the trick is just to put about 5% less oil in than the manual says.

With my van (t6 2018) I had this issue over multiple oil changes. Since I fill less oil on, the light has never been back.
