And I think it deactivates the tilt sensors too. Basically if you lock the van with the remote with something inside that moves, or your on a ferry, press that with the door open before locking the van.

Allegedly it reduces the amount of information your van swaps with VW mothership.
GM 'was' due for a massive case as they have been selling data in the US to insurance companies based on braking/acceleration data etc. Some tiers were collecting data points every 3 or 4 seconds depending on how much they coughed up.

I don't have the icon (digital dash) but I do get regular warnings on the head unit screen.
It's VW reminding the driver that the settings in the van are sharing data with VW over the LTE link. It's kinda moot if it's your van, you know what you set them to, but less so if it's a works van...

Double check your settings as you can dial them right back to the point where very little if anything should be shared.
On the upside you should get the advantage of software updates arriving without any visits to a dealer.
