Air Con while camping.

Anyone have a small AC unit on 12V while they camp, any advise on which one to buy, happy with higher price range, do not want it permanently fixed.

Thanks,
Mike

AC on 12v is a bit of a non starter as it will run a truck battery flat in 6hours.

But there are other options.

12v / USB fan (best option)

12v water cooler fan (over priced for what they are)

12v ice cube fan ( better than a regular fan .. but needs fresh ice to work)

12V is fine with my river flow on solar :)

looks to be a few out there, or cooling fans well spoken for, just looking for T6 forum first hand experience :)

I was watching one of Bob Earnshaws videos on YouTube last night and someone lent him a portable air cooler.
He had it plugged into a portable power pack and showed the amount of current it was using. It was all double Dutch to me but may give you a rough idea.
Skip to 22 minutes in the video, however, I looked at the unit on Amazon and the reviews are appalling.

yep . . . that comes under the:

12v water cooler fan (over priced for what they are)

catagory.
Not worth the dosh IMHO. . . . better off with the ice cube cooler,

Don’t forget, those that use ice or water evaporation as a cooling process increase humidity and condensation

I overheard the Roaming Radfords at the International Campervan Show earlier this month saying they had just had new batteries installed so they could run an electric air con unit while they were off grid.
They've fitted three 320Ah lithium batteries and associated gubbins in order to keep them as full as possible, that's a lot of kit to stay cool.

Always see this pop up. No idea if it works and its expensive?

Heading to Europe (France, Italy, Black Forest and Switzerland) around August time with our dogs so definitely interested in what portable AC etc would be best.

We have just bought a TotalCool 3000 to try (reviews seemed mixed, seen it working at an event and it felt good but there were lots next to each other on at the same time) and we’ve found it’s not very cold and it’s very noisy so will likely be returning

Looks like EcoFlow have just bought out a portable air con unit.
Doesn't look like it's available in the UK yet but judging by the YouTube video I've just watched it seems to actually work.
It does seem to be rather heavy and bulky though.

Massive power hog too ..

We’ve got two of the CAVN USB fans linked above plus a TotalCool3000. Currently in Italy and it’s far too warm in the van.

Everyone else seems to have windows open - our neighbour yesterday even slept with their sliding door open but with a mosinet on. Always thought with fans etc it’s best to leave windows shut…

Are we best opening or closing them please?

I'd say - Open.....

But it depends on the air temp outside the van.

If it hotter outside.... Then closed blinds and a couple of fans will help you to cool off inside ...

But at some.point it will be cooler outside....so open windows etc will help you cool off.

Last week we had two days of 40degC ( in UK at summer camp)

It was very hot, way too hot in the van and tent/awning.... (Having the fans on were just blowing super hot air about)

We ended up using the gazebo to create some shade.... Then put up the army camo netting we had around the sides to create more shade.... Then had fans in there with us....

That was untill the temp dropped later in the day.

Great thank you! That makes sense. We’re moving to a new site tomorrow but it’s going to be even hotter. We’ve got our windout awning and side/front shades for that so we’ll have to get that out and hope for the best.

We borrowed one of those shown in the video and like Dellmassive I think not worth the money. Currently, we use 2 of these, both whilst driving and when parked up and sleeping. Full charge, give around 6/7 hours on full power and for the size has a great cooling effect. Worth the money.

Exactly what we used on our trip through the heat of hell in Spain in June. Worked very well and we kept them plugged in to the 12V overnight so they didn't turn off.

These are the exact same ones we have - we have two as well. Any best placement tips? One of our dogs is currently being very spoilt with most on her!

My wife had one on the worktop facing her bed. Mine was clipped onto the handle on the pop top roof so was facing down towards me. We only used them at night.

Any of the evaporative types of devices, the type that you have to put water in, will fill your van with condensation & damp. All that water has to go somewhere.
