After market immobiliser

Hello everyone

We're going get a Tracker fitted to our in build Camper.

I'm just mulling over the whole after market immobiliser thing. If the van has one that was factory fitted. What is the benefit of getting an after market one fitted??

You can never have too much security.
I had a Ghost immobiliser on my van.
On my current Golf R I also have a Ghost immobiliser, a Scorpion tracker which also has a built-in immobiliser, I use a Disklok and I've also secreted an Apple Airtag somewhere in it.

The van has a Thatcham II compliant immobiliser that is difficult to defeat without the key.

Depending on the type you get, it means stealing the keys means Johnny Scumbag still wont be able to start the vehicle.

There are arguments for and against, but if properly installed theres certainly no harm in it even if it only helps you sleep at night.

Do your research before buying though. I was a sergeant on a dibble autocrime team for many years and I'm still networked in (my replacement is one of my neighbours) and still get the latest news - it would seem that one supposedly well thought of expensive type regularly named on here has been sussed out by the villains, and recent reports in the media bear that out.

Also ensure the installer isn't lazy and disables multiple circuits, and not just the same ones for every vehicle. Old Johnny isn't daft and knows the common places to tap in to the vehicle and will look there first, so you want an installer with some nouse.

+1 for Disklok. Relatively inexpensive, and more than once I've seen cctv of villains approaching a vehicle, spotting a Disklok, shaking their heads and stealing a similar vehicle from up the road instead. Without doubt the most effective single measure you can take to immobilise the vehicle.

id personally also go for an alarm with proximity function so that it wakes up before theyve even laid a hand on the fehicle, and with a pager or SMS function - not much point in an alarm if youre outmkf earshot when it goes off.

Best of luck,

re your last point, no point in an alarm no one hears, this is my big worry as my van is stored elsewhere and there’s not always anyone around. My T6 is 2024 plate so pretty good inbuilt security plus I use a Disklock and wheel clamp. For the next level, I was considering a tracker, but based on your comment above, I am wondering if an SMS alarm is a better choice? Van is about 5 minutes away which should give me time to arrive before J Scumbag can remove the xtra security. Also, people do keep saying they wouldn’t want the van back if stolen, which makes me wonder if alarms are better than trackers. Thoughts and advice please 😊

Am just looking into a Ghost (not sure which other ones are good to consider?), maybe 2 or Pro. Some of the installers sell / add a S5 or 7 tracker in as well, but wondering if that's overkill as surely if the Ghost is doing its job, the van won't be going anywhere! Also re the Ghost, is it worth having the fob version as if someone does have your keys (and the fob is attached, which is how you'd surely carry it), it will defeat the object, or am I missing something?

Would appreciate any input!
