Adblue error rest itself at 150 miles

So I let my Adblue go low (won’t do that again!) down to 350 miles. Mainly because I buy it at the pump that was until one week ago a lot cheaper at £1.06 per litre. You have to find a garage that HGV’s use as they have large Adblue tanks on their vehicles. And of course pumping it tells you exactly how much to add so you don’t overfill. 2.75 gallons added converted into litres by Google.

Initially it didn’t change the mileage. And for over a week it remained low. I tried all the usual hacks driving it. Leaving it 30 seconds, ignition on / off etc. Then all all of a sudden one day it was showing 4400 miles. And everything was back to normal.

Or so I thought……..next thing I am driving along and I get a long beep and Adblue warning for 600 miles to refill. I did 80 miles and it was down to 350 miles.

Spoke with VW assist who advised a VW dealer visit for VW to reset it. And / or VW updating the software.
Went to my local VW van centre who were next to useless. With the service guy saying he had never heard of any issues unless it had been over filled. (So obviously he had heard of Adblue issues! 🤷🏻‍♂️🙄)

With a 4 hour drive ahead of me. And 350 miles remaining. I just had to hope that I didn’t stall it until I got to my destination.

It errored all the way to a nail biting 150 miles after 50 miles actual driving distance Before it self resolved and showed 5500 miles Adblue remaining.

So hang in there if you experience this Adblue debacle. As several people have reported it should update.

I actually wondered about unclipping the cables from the Adblue tank. Turning the ignition on, so that it would show open circuit to the EMU. And then ignition off. And re-plugging the cable back in. I would have tried that had it not reset itself.

Note to self - fill the adblue as soon as the first warning flashes up, and don't just leave it.

The last time I got the 5000km? warning I was about to go on a 3000km road trip so topped it up, otherwise I may have left it and ended up in doo doo.

Had the van 3 months and having same problems. Just done 550 mile on holiday and lights returned checked add blue tank only put 4 litres in
Can anyone help new to forum ☺️

When you say “checked add blue tank” how? Where did you get the 4litres figure from?

It was full before the 550 mile trip came back and light came on topped it up with 4 litres of add blue
Yes, but how did you know to put 4litres in? If the light is on, it will take much more than 4 litres. 4 litres is a nonsense amount.

Ps, please tell me that you haven’t brimmed the ad blue tank and 4 litres was as much as it would take:unsure:

Yes that’s correct the 4 litres filled it back up

As you may have seen elsewhere on the forum the adblue system can be pretty tempermental :(
It is really important to only add the requested amount on the display. It sounds like you may have overfilled it.
In your case it seems that the system has become unreliable, and it may have even been like that before you purchased the van.
Sometimes a software update from the dealer can fix it, sometimes the dealer can reset the system for you.
There are also quite a few measuring blocks you can track using VCDS if you wanted to purchase that diagnostic tool.
Good luck, and welcome to the forum BTW.
