Hi, just joined the forum so finding my feet.

I have just been offered a T6.1, T28, LWB, tailgate 110BHP. Manual. Pure Grey.

Conversion to camper will also follow.

Any opinions on whether this base vehicle spec is OK for a full 4 berth conversion?

Thanks

Welcome Pidsley.

In short, yes good to use, but a few things to consider before you push the button, based on my own scoping for a full camper conversion:

Tailgate is ideal In my view, but it’s a personal choice and depends on how you plan to use it. Gives good protection form rain if needed. But needs more thought when parking if you want to get in the back when parked up
LWB - gives you more space, so no real downside there
T28 - depends on what type of fit out you are planning and type/weight of units, bed, tanks and anything else you plan on carrying.

As a comparison, my own base is a SWB T28 150 Highline. Many are happy with the 110, but I wanted the extra gear and grunt for long journeys. It will have a pop top, full fit out and is 4 berth, so a T28 can certainly do that for you.

If you're happy with the spec the only issue you might have is a saggy back end but that's easily and cheaply fixed with some T30 or T32 rear springs.

OK differences of opinions as expected. Good advice so thanks.

I'm happy with Tailgate. Fit out is as per the revolution range Noah.

Have thought about alloy wheel upgrade with slightly lower suspension too.

So I guess I'm now need to seriously consider whether the 110 is too low on power.

If you are never ever going to drive at night you don't need LED headlights.
Otherwise you do!
Never ever is a long time.

We have a T30 102bhp
I wouldn’t go below a T30 to be honest - particularly if you will be 3/4 up and doing longer trips.
110 BHP will be fine - we cruised up and down the Alps two years ago and had plenty of torque.

I've a T28 fully converted, it's been on the weighbridge and it weighed 2320kg. It's a 102 bhp T6 and I've done "well in excess" of the speed limit fully laden on an uphill section of the A9. I'm not sure how that experience translates or not to the T6.1

You might struggle to quickly accelerate and overtake something nippy but I don't have any problems in general and I'm regularly driving on Highland roads. That being said I always fall back on the thought that more power is better, however I'd have no qualms with the weight or power of the van you mention.
As an aside I have barn doors and would have preferred the tailgate but given that rain in Scotland is generally of the horizontal orientation then the tailgate is not much better than barn doors :) I am of the opinion that the bike rack for tailgates looks much better than those for barn doors.

Thanks for the advice. I agree on thr bike rack. Is yours a LWB? Ha Ha our southern rain is normally vertical.

The 6.1 PV will not have LED’s as standard in Startline or Highline. Won’t have H4’s either as they are now H7 halogens on the 6.1

But sounds like they are offering you a stock van, so it’s posisble they spec‘d it with LED’s when they ordered it, so worth asking the question with the dealer so you are clear.

Mine is a SWB. The LWB would, I imagine, make a small difference to the weight and power issues being referred to, by how much I've no idea.

I personally don’t think a T28 is the right choice for a camper, I’ve got a lwb T32 and when I fill it full of camping gear and 2 kids, 2 adults and a dog I’m right on the limit.

T30, lwb, led lights and 150 is the sweet spot.

I have now been offered that "sweet spot"spec. It's added nearly £10k to the price!!! Sooo tempted...

If you're planning on a full conversion and keeping it for years, go for the sweet spot. You don't want to be sitting in it thinking 'it's nice, but I wish I'd just....."
