Would someone be so kind as to open their side door fully and check if there is a bit of play at the opposite side from the handle/lock as mine has a fair amount of movement and it looks like the spring is not doing it's job.

If you mean it moves in and out slightly, rather than front to back, then yes, mine does that as well (on both side sliders).
