5th Gear Ratio....

does anyone know what the 5th gear ratio is on the the 102bhp vans?

Was thinking I might swap out for a better ratio, try and drop the RPM by 300, should make it more derivable at speed without too much impact on B' road journeys.

Doesn't look like a massive job and with a remap I think the van should pull ok.

you could just up the size of tyre. This will help all the through the box and as 1st gear is low for pulling weigh if you run not fully loaded it will drive better. The speedo will be out but if you have sat nav you can see by how much. It shouldn't take much to drop 300 rpm at motorway speeds.

I think this would be my actual definition of "a massive job"

If what I’ve read is correct then you don’t even have to remove the gearbox. Unbolt the end cover on the box and undo retaining bolts and bracket, heat 5th gear to 100c with a heat gun and slide off.
Pre heat new gear, slide on and reassemble

I’m sure there may be a bit more to it than that, but it is almost that simple...., I think

Hi did u have any luck in changing your 5th gear to upgrade it ??? Thanx

Hi I’m looking at doing the 5th gear upgrade. Did anyone get round to doing it and if so what ratio did you opt for ? My van is a startline 102 for reference.

An easier way to change the ratio up a bit is to swap over the tyres for larger overall diameter. It would of course be more like changing the final drive ratio rather than any one particular gear.

running 20x10s on 255-35s still runs around 2600rpm at 65. I’m looking at some touring and would like to get the rpm down a little on the motorway. Especially for Europe travel.

Use a tyre comparison site, there are many available here and in the USA. Putt in the details of tyres size ect then look at other rims say 16 - 18 inch. What are common tyres on here what do others run, compute the details etc. It might be that some tyre on used on here might be suitable, that or the next size up. Perhaps look towards a quality All Season tyre such as Michelin CrossClimate then it will cover you throughout the seasons including winter. There are other brands also. Some EU areas can be strict on tyres duringt winter periods for example.

I know what I have on has made a small difference. My speedo now reads very close to the GPS speed so that’s around 3mph increase for same RPM. I’ll do some digging on tyre sizes although at 20” plus and lowered I’m restricted to what size options. I have the cross climate’s on my work van they seem a great around tyre especially on the heavier van. And I’m covered for travel in Europe which I do drive over for work from time to time. Ultimately though to noticeably reduce engine RPM and increase fuel economy at cruising speed it’s either a 6 speed transmission upgrade or 5th gear swap.

From what I’ve read I don’t think a 6 speed will give you a better top gear ratio- just closer ratios thru the box.

My 6 speed manual is doing about 2,000 revs at 70mph in 6th gear, that is quite a difference.
