5.1 mileage verifcation

This is an odd one for sure.

My 5.1 was stolen 3 years ago. It was recovered just before Christmas in my home town of all places running around on cloned plates from another part of the country. I am amazed I had never spotted it nor any of my Transporter buddies.

I may have the opportunity to buy it back and waiting for insurers "value".

Someone has clocked the mileage since it was stolen as it now shows 79k miles whereas it was on about 225k. Or Maybe they just changed the clocks.

Obviously this would affect valuation significantly and its not rocket science to see the last MOT I had done showing it at 225k

What I am trying to work out is how to roughly check mileage done since it was nicked.

I have VCDS and should be able to get access to the vehicle to inspect it before deciding if to buy it part. Part of me wanting to know is that I would then set the total mileage as the correct mileage so that when I sell it on it is transparent on the speedo, ie has it done 79k in 3 years or actually only 20k.

I have seen things on here about checking transmission mileage? Will this also apply for a manual gearbox? The gearbox was actually replaced 2 months before it was stolen when it broke down in Croatia. Not sure if that would impact it.

Anyhow if someone could give me an idiots guide to using VCDS to check mileage (if this is indeed possible) I would very much appreciate it.

On the upside I got a nice 6.1 as a result of the theft hence finding this wonderful place.

Are you sure you want it back?
I self recovered a stolen Honda CB900F many gears ago, it was mechanically trashed after 3 weeks of drag racing the streets every night.
Justice was served on the perpetrator, no plod involved.
Pretty sure that most OBD2 scanners can recover the running hours, not sure about mileage.

Well I am expecting it to be super cheap and actually worth a fair bit more than I am going to pay for it so plan is to potentially sell it on. It was found with various stolen electrical items and some "white powder".

Funny thing is I am quite sure the recovery company have removed the head unit from the van. When it was stopped by Police there is a video of it from bodycam clearly showing a fancy large head unit sat at an angle which isn't the one it was stolen with. I am sure the Police didnt do it and didnt leave it unattended as it was with a key. When CoPart collected it there is no head unit. Maybe the recovery firm took it out for "safe keeping" so that will be line of questioning if I do go down the route.

Wouldn’t the head unit have phone contacts, possible sat nav info’ that maybe used in an investigation?
The running hours and possibly milage is stored in the ECU as far as I’m aware.
@mmi is the expert on this.

actually not something I had thought of, quite possibly I guess seeing as it was a fancier than normal looking head unit (albeit no idea of brand) and so that could make some sense.

I can no longer find the Police video which is annoying.

Is it DSG ?
Mileage is stored in cluster and also gearbox and easily retrieved with VCDS, easy to alter cluster mileage not sure you can do the same with the gearbox ?

no its a manual. Can it still be retrieved via VCDS if so any chance on an idiots guide for when I get access to the vehicle in next week or so?

Please post a couple of VCDS blockmap files

1) 01-Engine blockmap
2) 03-ABS blockmap
3) 17-Instruments blockmap

How-to create a blockmap file:

[VCDS]
[Applications]
[Controller Channel Map]
- Single Controller Address = 01 for engine, 03 for ABS, 17 for Instrumemts
- Login or security access code: Leave blank
- Function: Measuring values
- Output: CSV file
[Go]

The result CSV files are saved into dircetory C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs

Ideally, for comparison you would have saved those files also three years ago 🤨

Also could try if VCDS application "EDC15-16 mileage" works for you. However, T5.1 ECUs are EDC17 so not likely to work but won't hurt to try

[VCDS]
[Applications]
[EDC15-16 mileage]

My van does report transmission mileage on blockmap for 02, but I have a DSG transmission, so may be different on a manual. It does also report a slightly different distance than from other Blockmaps. EG 01 reports 51418km, 17 has 53610 km, so all slightly different.

Its ok to see some slight variations but normally they are smaller than that
Dealers can reset mileage when they PDI a van upto 3 times i think before first delivery but only if its under ?50 miles/kilometers i think? AFAIK that only resets cluster miles and not gearbox
