2016 T6 Transporter, loose Cooling System Part Identification

Good evening, Everyone. Your help will be appreciated ... I am having a cooling system fault investigated on my T6. A bottom hose was removed and this fell out. Does anyone know what this is, please? Thank you in advance.

It does, doesn't it. The thermostat has been changed and is a large plastic manifold with a rotating ball valve (not an old style poppet valve). So, the part that dropped out is not the thermostat (it is far too small anyway), but I would like to know what it is and what it does ....

Better to be a piece of thermostat than a valve spring (although i think you would know if it was from the head !)

Agreed, Pauly. If a valve spring has got into the coolant circuit, I am looking at a slightly more significant failure mechanism .

I did not know about a second thermostat .... I will investigate!

I was thinking that too, but looks more like a thermostat to me. Maybe put in some hot water and see if it does anything.
Agreed. This is definitely not the thermoelement & spring from the main thermostat, however, there might be a second (small) thermostat on one of the returns to the Coolant Reservoir ...

Looks pretty similar to this..

The one on the link is not from a T6, but there could be one on the van somewhere other than the main thermostat?

This coolant circuit isn't right - it has an old style thermostat (not the swivel ball type) and it has an intake charge cooler (mine is ATACC) - but, we are looking for 1/ a second thermostat and/or 2/ any spring-loaded non-return valves. I do not have a PDK gearbox, so do not think that I have a gear cooler and a 3rd thermostat.
