20 inch troubles?

My T6 campervan came to me with nice 20” wheels. Over the 6000 miles since I bought it I've had to replace three tyres due to bulges all on the rears. They are 285 /40 R20 on a 106 load index. I thought the first two were due to the supplied cheap tyres (Black lion brand), I replaced them with Nexens which I've always had good experiences with and now another tyre has gone.
My question is, is it to be expected to have tyre problems on 20" wheels? I'm considering down sizing to 18" s. Do these side walls look too stretched maybe?

Many of us get on well with 20's, especially with a good suspension set up. I've not heard of anybody on 285's though! Are they on the front too?

Look like Judds, nothing but trouble, I'll take them off your hands for a fiver.
That tyre looks well stretched, possibly to avoid rubbing on the arch liner but more likely just for the look.
I reckon a decent non budget make of tyre will improve what looks to be Judds or Bola and quite expensive wheels.
The only time I've had side walls delaminating was with some "Ditchfinder 2000" 225 40 17 series, £35 each fitted on my old Daihatsu Materia and they had bulges only on the inside wall where you couldn't see the damage but knew by the steering wheel feedback that something was wrong.

The fronts are the same tyre size and look less stretched I think the fronts are 9 inches deep and the rears are 11.

Really need to look at the wheels and figure out the rim width and offset ET, 9" on the front is pushing the envelope a bit and it looks from the picture that you've got a bit of poke going on there, might be just the angle though.

Tyres in the image above look stretched! Are the tyres on an officially recommended wheels size and rim width for that tyre size.

On a quick look I believe that they should be between 9.5 - 11.0 inch rim preferably somewhere in the middle would be ideal.

I think it's a bit stretched, I don't know much about the official sizes but the van conversion company I bought the van from assured me they were fine.

They also stuck on those first cheapy tyres so whether they seem decent converters or not they're trying to turn a profit so will tell all of us any old bollards to close a sale.
If you love the look of the van then downsizing to 18s might leave you feeling a bit cheated however getting the right size for your particular case is why so many different wheel sets come up for sale or swap in the for sale section.
In my case my heart says 20s for looks but here I am 6 yrs later still on 18s, lowered with coilovers and thicker ARBs but with no cracked rims, no tramlining or sluggish pick up but just a bit mumsy looking.
If you can afford it get a set of 18s and keep those Judds while you make your mind up.

The rears measure 11 inches deep so I assume they are legal. The conversation company are well regarded, so I'd be surprised if they weren't.

I could be wrong but thought any wider than 10.5 on the rears would rub on the arch lining? Do you drive up many curbs to have the tyres bulging as a sign of sidewall damage? I too run 20s 10.5 wide and tyres are of the stretched look as lowered and rubber bands but never had any issues.. but I do run a set of 17s out of summer haha

If you measure my rims from the outside edges they measured 11in, on the inside edge they measure 10.5. I've not had any rubbing, but mine doesn't appear to be lowered do I don't know if that makes any difference?
