12v van cable

Hi all,

mom fitting an additional 2 12v sockets from my leisure battery to my tv.
By mistake I ordered 10 gauge but as I’m running two off the same feed (individually fused) it would be fine.

move ran short of bloody cable so need to change it,desperate to get it done I’ve got some cable my neighbour uses to install alarms with which he tells me is fine. I’m not so sure
So my question is, what cable should I run for 2 12v sockets

Bugger just ordered some hahaha
If you fuse the cable appropriately you’ll be ok but it’s not ideal. Perhaps run a separate cable to each socket

That’s what I’m going to do, dude each with an in-line fuse then run them into a fuse box which comes off my leisure battery

Sorry to jump in on this but I have some 0.75 mm twin core, can I use this for a ubs socket fused with a 5 amp fuse, no more than about a meter from the fuse box, or should I get 1.5 mm?

As @Deaky said about 4mmSQ is better for a 12v socket @ 15A

0.75mm cable may be ok for a low power USB 2.0 (fused low at 5A) on a very short run . . . . , but not for USB 3.0+ or USB-C PD or a 12v socket in anyway.

always best to rate the cable and fuse correctly - do it wrong and it will melt stuff and cause a fire.

15a draw is silly via a 12v socket. personally i would use 2.5mm cable and limit the max amps to 10a per socket.

I’d prob use a minimum of 2.5mm but would aim for a 4mm ideally bud. Lower voltage higher current!
remember volts jolts and amps plants!!

Thanks all, I have put a 15a in-line fuse to each socket, this can be reduced to 10a I guess. Also the cable was already purchased but I will try and get a hold of them today to change my order :)

So is there any reason why i couldn't use single 6491b cable for wiring the van? providing the rating is correct obviously. And can i use any colour, or should it be red, black etc?

Only as i have access to 6491b .

Thank you

6491b obviously not as flexible as a tri-rated type cable and won’t carry as high current bud. That said I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as long as installed and crimped well.

small outlay to use the preferred tri rated.

These are the two sockets with the inline fuse just down the pillar

Saw your USB sockets in the door pillar and I would like to fit similar, one each side of the van. However, I will be running the cables from the main fuse board (ignition switched supply)beneath the dash, but have not pulled up the carpet or removed the pillar trim yet- is there an obvious cable route and do you have to remove seats and the whole cab carpet?
