Thanks @Dav-Tec, great suggestions. Once the RCD330 was detached the heater controls behaved themselves, so it's entirely likely it was causing the issue. However, I also noticed a bare blue wire behind the controls/under the stereo which was chopped at some point and _could_ have been shorting...

Hmm. I've definitely heard mixed reviews. But I've also seen lots of units on ebay falsely being advertised as RCD330 when actually they are RCD360 (have no 3.5 jack socket at front). Apparently RCD360 are of much lower build quality as far as I can gather.

I only ever used it with the adapter. My layout etc wasn’t ideal for plugging in. All the users on the rcd330 forums don’t report this issue but it was a deal breaker for me. I was trying to be transparent

If you are not bothered about DAB, your safest bet is an RCD330/360.
