I am going through the process of researching the VW T6.1 van..

What should i look out for in a model?
What should i avoid buying?

Its a minefield of info out there for a complete noob like me...

I may purchase just a bare van or buy a converted one to a camper.

As an example, would this be a good buy:

Thanks people....👍

That looks a nice van and a decent price.
It’s got the most reliable engine in it the 150bhp one.
Avoid biturbos and 204bhp models as they get the most problems.
Hiring vans with different layouts is a good way to understand what set up suits you best.

Do you think the price is ok?

Yes
2 years ago when I was looking a full camper around 5 years old with less than 50k miles on it were £40k
That one you’re looking at had a really good leisure power system in it also.
I think the price is very fair if not a bit cheap

The 6.1 engines should provide little problem as of yet the most powerful diesel the C version 146KW 199BHP has no known problems as attested by Dellmassive very long post, supported by others. Not sure if that engine has morphed back into 204bhp with a mild upgrade but I would go for that engine myself as their is no derogatory evidence so far against it. I am a little confused as too why a few continue to advise against it or is it only the B version 204bhp version of the T6 that people are warning against? My own T6 has the newer version of the engine C version 146kw/199bhp as it was a latter version off the production line This engine being the same as the T6.1.

You've heard of the halo effect? Suspect the earlier bi-turbo issues have had the opposite effect.

Sorry a little dense can you be more explicit?
Not my words, but "the Halo Effect is a cognitive bias where positive impressions in one area unconsciously influence our overall perception of a person, product, or brand in other areas."

Car manufacturers try to use this effect with their flagship models - in effect, their flagship model receives good publicity and positive feedback, so, by association, their lesser models are viewed more positively by the public... or, at least, that's the theory.

If the vehicle is a 6.1 is should not matter how many turbos it has according to the evidence provided by @Dellmassive @mmi et al up to the date of their detailed thread, of course things might change but however the T6.1 has been around for quite some time and our pages are not full of dozens of related problems any more than any other engine. If they where then I would be gone along with my vehicle never to touch VW again I would probably migrate to Ford ha or revisit LR to experience what problems their new breed have to offer in terms of problems, new being better!

Leaning towards finding a panel van and getting done what i need done....finding the right van is like a minefield. Wary of buying private too....

Not an approach I would criticise. What price peace of mind?
No idea to be honest.....

I dont want an old van and not high mileage...i think i want to buy above 2019 if possible...

Any advice welcome people..👍

Was meant as a rhetorical question ;) - i.e. you can't put a price on peace of mind.

As a complete noob to Transporter vans its like a minefield looking for one. Especially when you dont know anything about them....

I have driven a couple many years ago when moving but i didnt take much thought about them then..
