Yes, if you have a coding tool like VCDS and you know how to use it, relatively straightforward

All the van sees is either something connected or not connected, it won’t have any way of differentiating between connected equipment

Yes that makes sense. I heard that BMW has an option in the menu to say what is connected and that later controls whether the lane assist / rear traffic are enabled or not.
I doubt that VW has it in T6.1 though, but maybe someone can confirm.

If anything like that were available (from any brand) then surely it would need manual input to differentiate ?

Just by chance I found this, At the bottom there is "trailer recognition". Maybe it has such option?

My van has a 3rd party hitch installed and I do not have this option although, when I have the bike rack on and reversing, the infotainment shows like there is something behind the van.

What options open up if you click on the trailer recognition menu?

This is my module 13

And here 5F adaptations:
I have enabled 1st, 4th 5th and 6th, in 7th (msg_bus_0x36 i picked comfort bus (I saw @Robert's comment somewhere))

And all that gave me is new entry in driver assist settings called "Drive on alert" which can't be ticket on/off and can't be unfolded (function currently unavailable).

EDIT: After long restart the "Trailer recognition" menu appeared but can't be unfolded too - function currently unavailable. Would be great to know what is in there - is it worth the hassle even. I've seen some users here having this option already (presumably factory fitted).
