Fleetingly, it crossed my mind that road tax should be charged per driver, not per vehicle - after all, a driver can only drive 1 vehicle at once... then I gave my head a wobble and remembered that road tax is all about revenue generation and nothing to do with road maintenance/environmental concerns.

Makes sense. And would fit with the proposal for EVs to pay per mile from 2028.

And/or tax the very rich and the big companies that work incredibly hard to legally avoid taxes such as Amazon and Uber.

They already do, with VAT and duty....and then charge car tax on top of it all.

Be grateful we are not like some European countries like italy. Road tax. Change of ownership tax approx €500 each time bought and sold although I’m surprised uk not done that as well. Prices of Transporters are crazy (high) compared to the uk oh and you really are not allowed to hardly modify and any campers must be certified and registered and tested accordingly.

This is a common scenario re. Regulation, and not just with campervans. I have other pocket emptying hobbies apart from the van. Boating/diving/fishing to name a few. Here in the UK, if you want a boat, you go and buy a boat and off you go. No license/insurance/training required. Do that in any other European/USA country and you’ll be in bother. Same goes for sea fishing, buy a rod, go catch your tea. In Spain, you need a permit issued by the regional government that you’re in, if you move around, as in touring with a van and boat, you have to buy a license for each area that you visit. You also need insurance and proof of competence for skippering the boat. Diving is even more onerous, expect to be boarded by customs/navy/fisheries protection, have the boat searched etc. We are very, and I mean VERY un-regulated here in the UK, although things are starting to creep in.

yeah my mate bought a little speedboat about 20 years ago, we were about 25/30years old at the time, and we went down to Poole Harbour and launched the thing, remember weaving in and out of all the various yachts, sailing boats and dodging a huge catamaran thinking it was weird that we could just launch in one of the busiest harbours in the country with any sort of training/basic instruction...
