Daughter turns 17 in a few months so we're on the lookout for a reasonably priced learner car.

I've been researching for a while, looking on ebay and autotrader and I think for our budget we're looking at a 2014 model year +/- 1 year. There seems to be a lot of cat S and N cars out there - we want an HPI clear car. Only other requirements are a rev counter and air con which means a Move Up, SE Mii/Citigo or a special edition.

I did wonder if I was a bit early posting this advert but with extended lead times for new cars people plan car changes well ahead!

Anyway if you or a relative have one of these and are planning to change in the next 3 or 4 months then let me know.

Cheers

Ian

We had an High Up! for a year and I quite liked it. The only reason we sold was that it seemed to have a permanent condensation problem. Needed the aircon on constantly just to keep it at bay.
Good luck with your search.

My 2 kids learnt in a Citroen C1 which was a brilliant little vehicle to learn in.

The drivers side sill is know to fill up with water from the petrol cap! Fix is to pull one of the sill grommets. Other foibles are rust around the fuel filler cap and chattery gearbox when in neutral

We've had 2018 Citigo SE for four years. Great simple car but as you said SE gives aircon & rev counter. Five door version is quite practical. Sorry no plans to change it, that doesn't help you but speaks volumes about how we rate it. I'm saving ours for when our daughter's VW Fox finally expires (not that that seems to be on the cards). If I hear of any for sale I'll give you a shout.

We still have our 2014 Seat Mii, bought from new, great little car, just clipped 150,000 miles. Daughters using it next week for her test!!
Not selling either but would highly recommend it.
Ours is the Toca version, satnav, AC and a rev counter althought thats a very small dial that appears to be connected with silly string - there's 2-3 second lag between hearing the engine and the rev counter moving.
Also insurance really cheap - £20 to add her as a learner for the year, And when she (finally) passes if we transfer the V5 to her name, fully comp, main driver, no NCD 10K a year with mum and dad as named drivers, only £280-300 with no black box.

Have you not considered a Polo? We got one for our daughter. A 2013 1.2 60 PS Match. The thinking being that it would be a more useful car for when she passes and wants to carry more people and stuff.

We’ve had 3 Fabias in the past which is basically a Polo. Really liked them - just fancied a change.

Toca is one of the models that gets a few additional features like leather steering wheel - defo on the list of potentials!

I don’t know why, but I’m drawn to the Mii S model. If only it had a rev counter and air con….6B2861C7-07CB-42B9-BF51-7C4ADB13CD00.jpeg

Another consideration for me which led me a Polo was being able to upgrade the radio. Not something to worry about with the L plates on, or me popping to the shops, but once she's out on her own...

Check out kia picanto. Look for one with front radar, brings insurance down. Also insure it in her name. Should be ridiculous cheap and some policy's give 12 months NC after 10 months even on a provisional licence.

I look most days - once you strip out the high milers, 74bhp, Cat S/N, those 100 miles away, private sellers wanting forecourt prices, generally over priced, poverty spec etc there are probably 1 or 2 a week I’d consider.

Its a weird market at the moment.

Is that really a problem as long as you have the service history ............. a learner / new driver isn't going to do that many miles

Whats your budget?

£5k ideally less but would go a bit more for the right car.

We went around the Coventry warehouse type dealerships yesterday - there was one Mii that looked nice in the pictures but one glance down the drivers side showed a very poor repair to the drivers door - rippled still and dull paint.

I’m searching all the obvious places incl ebay, gumtree, auto trader, pistonheads, owners club forums etc

I wish I’d kept my owned from new, 64plate High Up that I sold in 2019 for £4900.

Now my son is 17, it seems that the basic versions of a similar age and condition are generally more money now.

Just picked up a new UP GTi, that I ordered after Xmas and decided to keep her 19 plate GTi for the time being until my son passes his test!

Had an 2012 up! Black that was my dad's car. Had all the extras including heated seats, satnav and ac. Was cat n due to the previous owner reversing it into a tree branch and shattering the back window. Was a fab little car but sold it last year for 2k
