Hi all,

Any ideas how to get these off? Gone to check pressure and 3 of the 4 are stuck tight. Cheers

Still stuck after using those grips and our friend WD40 on them? I wonder if they knuckled the thread when they went on?

I remember putting a set of ally caps on SWMBOs car years ago and they seized on. Its something to do with dissimilar metals and salt water. The garage managed to get them off with force and greased them. Always used plastic ones since.

Try penetrating fluid. You may have to get the big grips on them - a little squeeze might crack the corrosion. Its balancing force to get the job done without ripping the valve out!

Pass... but on 3 of the 4? I assume the winter rain and salt on the roads has caused the issue...

bugger.

Perhaps 2 pairs of grips - the valve insert has a brass insert for most of its length. Gripping the stem might enable more force to be exerted on the cap?

Probably call VW assist, don’t want to bugger the thread or the alloy... what a thing to call them for!!!

As per above, its due to the alloy cap oxidising to the steel thread. I've removed them before with 2 pairs of pliers but you do risk ripping the valve out. Just use plastic ones.

Spray them with deodorant or similar to cool them then chuck some boiling water on them, rapid change of temperature could shock them loose?

if you have the caps at the top the lub will penetrate better ....use the power.. gravity:laugh:

pps... Try hairdryer to expand the alloy casing

why not just apply some WD40 or similar, then visit your local independent tyre seller at the earliest opportunity. If they rip the valve out you're in the right place to get it fixed. They probably see it all the time and have a technique for removal.

If you have used grips on the valve stem, they can no longer be trusted.
A trip to the tyre dealer for new valves..
Happened to me so never use metal caps anymore.
Was very careful with them. AA is here with a hacksaw blade...

With these types of caps it’s best to apply a small amount of grease before fitting.
